Substantial firings of federal workers have begun

Mass firings of federal workers have begun. That was the announcement Friday from the White House as Republicans worked to exert more pressure on Democratic lawmakers to end the government shutdown. In a court filing, the budget office said well over 4,000 employees would be fired, though it noted that the funding situation was “fluid and rapidly evolving.” Democrats blasted the move as unions for federal workers quickly took the matter to court. President Donald Trump said of firings, “it'll be a lot,” and he suggested that those losing their jobs would be in areas that were “Democrat oriented.”

A spox for the #OMB said the reductions are “substantial” but did not offer more immediate details.

The #Education Dept is among the agencies hit by new #layoffs, a dept spox said Friday without providing more details. The dept had ~4,100 employees when #Trump took office in January, but its workforce was nearly halved amid #MassFirings in the admin’s first months. At the start of the shutdown, it had ~2,500 employees.

Federal #health workers were also being fired Friday, though #HHS did not say how many or which agencies were being hit hardest.

The #Trump admin previewed that it would pursue the aggressive layoff tactic shortly before the #shutdown began, telling all federal agencies to submit their RIF plans to the #OMB for its review. It said RIF plans could apply for federal programs whose funding would lapse in a shutdown, are otherwise not funded & are “not consistent with the President’s priorities.”

@Nonilex 1000+ gone before the shutdown? A rather nice proof that the shutdown isn't the problem, then?
@Nonilex So how long before the lawsuits get filed, since many folks have pointed out that the President doesn't have the authority to fire anyone during a shutdown?
@Nonilex <Trump> "NOW LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO!"

The eternal creed of the bully.

@Nonilex

I thought there were very strict rules, like having to give notice, for a RIF. I'm going to try to see if I can find it. If I do, I'll post it.

@Nonilex Bring it own Mr. Vought
@Nonilex I'm not sure "Do as I say or I'll burn my own house down!" Is going to be a successful tactic.
