Tech billionaires seem to be doom prepping. Should we be worried?

The debate is ramping up about what happens if - or when - computer intelligence overtakes humans

Are these AI people all idiots?

"...Ilya Sutskever, chief scientist and a co-founder of Open AI, is reported to be one of them.....Mr Sutskever was becoming increasingly convinced that computer scientists were on the brink of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) ...In a meeting, Mr Sutskever suggested to colleagues that they should dig an underground shelter for the company's top scientists before such a powerful technology was released on the world..."We're definitely going to build a bunker before we release AGI," he's widely reported to have said, though it's unclear who he meant by "we"."

The (right hand that salutes like a Nazi) guy who would rather let the entire third world starve to save himself some taxes is NOT GOING TO provide "universal high income" to anyone but himself, BBC. He (and his friends) think your net worth is your value, and if you have no net worth, you are worthless and should die. (I've personally heard one of his close friends say this out loud)

@ai6yr

I think maybe the issue is they haven't studied history. Or, it could be that many of these billionaires are more lucky than smart? Zuccs wasted billions on a VR multiverse you can't pay people to use, and now he's shilling these dorky "AI" glasses. He keeps being wrong, and people keep listening to him.

Speaking again about history, hoarding wealth doesn't typically work out so hot for the hoarders, but to paraphrase the famous line from Dr. Tobias Funke on Arrested Development, "it might work for them."

Perhaps if they stopped hoarding their wealth, they wouldn't need to build doomsday bunkers? But as my old man used to say, "if wishes were fishes, I'd have mine fried."

@sauc3 Zuckerberg is feasting on his luck being in the right place and the right time for Facebook, his need to rate "hot chicks" in college accidentally helping him create a social network. Having met many a startup founder, there's a combination of luck and having enough technology to get you to the next stage (ie got to scale and had enough tech to work well enough to get to where it is). It could have been someone else. It's not his "vision". Obviously.

@ai6yr

Now I'm wondering if Zuccs has ever had an original idea? But I think you are totally correct, and "feasting on his luck" puts it perfectly.

Facebook, ConnectU reportedly reach $65 million settlement

Details of a confidential settlement between Facebook and ConnectU were apparently inadvertently published by a law firm that had represented ConnectU.

Computerworld
@ai6yr all these dumbass techbros and investors need to lay off the ketamine and stop getting high huffing each others’ farts
@ai6yr can they please just all fly off to John Galt land and never, ever return

@rpmik @ai6yr

Build their Network Cities somewhere they won't bother anyone.

@ai6yr

preferred term - "powerful AI"

Indeed. Power requires Intel. Leverage. Extortion … #elizaeffect #posiwid

@ai6yr β€œI once met a former bodyguard of one billionaire with his own "bunker", who told me his security team's first priority, if this really did happen, would be to eliminate said boss and get in the bunker themselves. And he didn't seem to be joking.”

@ai6yr

Bunkers are to protect them from us, not AI.

On the other hand the article points out their basic fallacy.
"I once met a former bodyguard of one billionaire with his own "bunker", who told me his security team's first priority, if this really did happen, would be to eliminate said boss and get in the bunker themselves. And he didn't seem to be joking."

@oldoldcojote It's actually extremely obvious, even to stupid people. In a functioning world, power is political, and armed guards are subject to extreme consequences if they get out of line, up to and including state execution. In a failed world, the only real power is physical, meaning whomever is armed and close to you. Even the worst of Zuck's guards could probably take him, and they know it. His bunker is their lair, and they know it.
@oldoldcojote I guess the only good news (none for billionaires, LOL) is that these armed goons are still weak compared to any actual military, who'd easily crush them. Some guys with small arms and no support are mostly just waiting to die.

@ai6yr They're prepping for the eventual banquet we'll be having, featuring the rich as the main course.

@ai6yr Just locate their air intakes and engage a concrete mixer. The pharaohs wanted to be buried in lavish tombs, too.
