Swearing carries more of a taboo with it in English, (esp. US English ) than in Norwegian, so we have to be careful. /Personally/ I think swearing in serious discourse falls flat when there is no *meaning* conveyed, or the actual meaning is "I hereby giv up all attempts at actual meaning" . 2/3
The Hegseth and J.D. Vance examples from the article fall into this category. Hegseth's β€œWe’re done with that shit,” is admitting that he is attacking an ill-defined concept, nothing concrete. Vance's β€œI don’t give a shit what you call it.” is flat out admitting he has no answer. 3/3
