[Edit: I'd like to request no more boosts for this post for now - my DMs are still open to, and please do still forward this to specific folks you think might be interested. I've got so many responses that it's going to take me a while to get to all of them - which I will. ❤️ you all for being so supportive of this idea.]

I have an offer to make: do you want to run an instance on the fediverse for a group that's underrepresented here?

I'll pay the bills. Period.

I'll do admin if needed (software updates and the like). But you decide what kind of community you want it to be, so you put together the mod team.

DM me.

@feralthoughts this offer is open to you of course

@ricci

Thank you for the offer - I deeply appreciate it!

At this stage, I myself am leading a precarious life, so do not have the bandwidth to take it up. But if someone I know wants to run a Fedi instance, and is hesitating due to lack of funds, I will connect them with you.

@feralthoughts understood! I realize this is not exactly the kind of thing your threads were about, but I did find them very inspirational, and I want to do what I can as one person!
@ricci what's the catch?
@electricmood none. I want to see the fediverse be a place that is open to more people, and this is the simplest way I can think of to help that happen

@ricci @electricmood

That sounds like a very reasonable investment. I hope you are able to put something together. Thank you.

@ricci @electricmood goddess do i love nerds.
@smolbrain @electricmood well, it turns out that I thought I loved computers but actually I love people
@ricci @electricmood hey hey now. Love is not a finite resource. It can be both!
@ricci @smolbrain @electricmood god damn, man. Way to write the rallying cry for every fedi admin on the planet.
@ricci Computers and I are love-hate. (If rom-com tropes were life, I should have fucked HAL. God, so annoying, but I can't stay away!)
@ricci People like you are why I love it here.
@isucceed there are so, so many people that are why I love it here
@ricci I hope @ErickaSimone sees this thread
@paprikapink @ricci under this and I am interested.
@ErickaSimone @paprikapink Fantastic, I am down, pick a domain name and I will set you up as the admin

@ricci

I don't have bandwidth to help, but would be more than willing to contribute to keeping lights on.

Let me know if you get traction.

@ricci You're awesome. 👍
@LoganFive there are so many awesome people here, and I want there to be more
@ricci I'm operating two fedi instances (social.buddyverse.net and lemmy.buddyverse.net) as of now. Planning to run another one specifically for Bangladeshi users. Electricity is pretty cheap here. Hardware (specially storage) and internet speed is the only bottleneck we have.
@ml Right on! I think Bangladesh is one of the places that westerners could really benefit from learning more about
@ricci I'm wondering whether we will face any issue if we use the domain mastodon.com.bd? Do you know if there is any restriction in place by Mastodon GmBH?
@ml there are *lots* of "mastodon.x" domains, I don't think this will be a problem
@ricci I don't have the bandwidth or knowledge to run it myself, but one thing I'm missing from both Twitter and Instagram is a thriving musician community. I'm partial to electronic music production, but all of it is basically non-existant here as far as I can tell.
@SonnyBonds this sounds very interesting!
@SonnyBonds may I connect you with @kel ?
@ricci @kel Sure! I don't really know what I could provide in making it happen, but I'm open for discussions.
@ricci @kel (Disclaimer, if it matters, I work with making music production software at Kilohearts.)
@SonnyBonds @ricci @kel More musicians doing music in Mastodon: @digits (also a great music curator) 🙃

@SonnyBonds @ricci Absolutely.. there's a few who post about music production news and the like but there doesn't seem to be much interaction going on. Could be so much more but it probably need dedicated instances to make it happen (and homely).

kHz doesn't have any presence right? (neither do we)

@claes @ricci Yeah, I haven't seen a lot at all. Not in the same way as on the other "big ones". I think part of it may be that a lot of the things people create and share are intented to have a self-promotional effect as well, to get your music out there, and comparing to the others reach is probably a lot lower on Mastodon so it doesn't feel worthwhile.

We have a stub account but we're not actually posting anything. To start with I wasn't really sure where to create it, for this very reason.

@SonnyBonds @ricci

There are a few groups on https://about.fedigroups.social/directory for specific musical genres that might be worth following.

Fedigroups will automatically boost any post they are tagged in which means they work well for seeing posts that would not usually be federated to your instance unlike hashtags

FediGroups : Directory

@SonnyBonds

Have you happened upon musicians.today? That has a fair few Fedi musicians, though not always posting about music all the time.

https://musicians.today/about

Musicians Today

Fediverse community for musicians of all levels, instruments, regions, languages, and genres.

Mastodon hosted on musicians.today
@unchartedworlds Will check it out, thanks!

@SonnyBonds

This is me with singer/songwriter hat on:
@SingleBass

(I have a synth-pop thing which may emerge at some point as well)

@unchartedworlds @SingleBass Good stuff! Singer/songwriter with bass can't be that common? Works well though!

Synth-pop is up my alley, looking forward to that :)

@SonnyBonds

Thanks! Yeah there's not many people doing solo bass & vocals. And I really think it's a great format for playing live. Back when I was touring*, I got some great opportunities as a support act, and I'm pretty sure some of that was from promoters reasoning like: doesn't need a drum kit on the stage, only 2 channels on the mixer, and yet a change from the typical singer+guitar.

(* not that I totally wouldn't tour now, but I wouldn't now like I did then, unless a proper "sterilising" covid vaccine comes along)

@ricci
@xclnt Is this something for your community or do you prefer to mix in?
@cg @xclnt my community is already well represented here, I want to do what I can, however small, to help other communities be represented here
@ricci @xclnt
Ah, my bad - my question was targeted at @xclnt 😅
@cg @ricci Pretty sure my “underrepresented” community basically runs this place — they just haven’t recognized the pattern yet. 😅
@ricci Super kind offer. Would/could you run glitch-soc or just Mastodon? More asking out of interest, thought about something blindness related but we have a cupple of great instances (including mine) where it wouldn't really make sense to further split imo.
@jonathan859 I'm not personally familiar with glitch-soc, but I'd be willing to try! One of the things I like about this place is the respect that (at least from my perspective) that it shows to folks that access it in different ways
@ricci It might not be a bad idea to put the cash you're willing to commit towards supporting instances that struggle to pay their bills on a regular basis, if you aren't already?
@ricci that's awesome. I don't have a group that I can think of that i would be useful for, but this is a great idea. If you find one and they need a backup admin or someone to teach them how to be self sufficient ill volunteer some time.
@ricci Thank you for your generous offer. I will discuss this with my friends and recommend to them that we move our "private" fb group to here with your help.
@ricci there are a bunch of communities already, mostly Black and indigenous, that struggle to pay their bills month to month

@ricci Maybe #ADHD people? We certainly would need the help. 😆

Not me, though. I'm too distracted by plenty of other stuff to get involved with managing anything. 😏

@yora @ricci
Hahaha if that instance even made it to 1 year without getting owned or being too out of date to talk to other instances it'd definitely disappear because the domain didn't get renewed or it ran out of storage for its db/images
@EndlessMason @yora @ricci I mean these are all things that ricci would be responsible for, so one less thing to worry about 🙃

@ricci I stumbled upon this post by accident after I was shown moderation-explorer.online and I'd love to help out in any way I can also be it financial or technical support.

Maybe setting up a way for others to donate into a pool to help cover expenses and/or building a network of sysadmins willing to pool their collective knowledge and experience together?

@ricci did you have a group in mind or
@ricci Yes, for us Autistics.
@ricci not sure how to DM though
