How to Use Storytelling in Negotiation

Facts tell, but stories sell. It's hard to make data feel compelling. Stories create the emotional pull that leads to agreement.

Here’s a simple way to build one: (1/3)

1. Find the core conflict. What’s the real problem your idea fixes?
2. Choose a character they know. Use a client or colleague they’ll recognize.
3. Build the story arc. Show the struggle, the turning point (your solution), and how things get better.
4. Put your ask inside the resolution. Make your request part of the happy ending.

Keep it real. Being authentic matters more than a perfect delivery. And tie your idea to what they already care about. (2/3)

Don’t make the story too long. Aim for less than a minute. And don’t assume they’ll get the point—say clearly what the lesson is.

Try asking “what if” to paint a picture of success you can achieve together.
