Macron: "We were incredibly naive to entrust our democratic space to #SocialNetworks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

🤔

@fingolas well we have to write Macron.
Write to the President

Send a message to the President of the Republic or to Mrs. Brigitte Macron to let them know of your concerns or thoughts.

@fingolas is this you?
@szbalint @fingolas it would be a lot better if they had an option like mastodon as well in there, now all the options are one of the mentionned US networks.
@tshirtman @szbalint @fingolas The French government does have a Mastodon server and I'm normally 100% behind shaming ALL EU governments into breaking away from the monopolies. Having said that... this speech was given in Germany and GERMANS don't get to talk shit about him on this topic. He's been warning them for years about what keeping Europe dependent on the US militarily means and Germany, Northern and Eastern Europe vilified him for it. A Mastodon button won't chage that.
@Mnemosinee @szbalint @fingolas i'm French and i know they have mastodon servers, i don't think it's the result of a top level will, and it's sad that they don't get more use and publicity.
@tshirtman @szbalint @fingolas I've written to both my local government and a couple of European institutions about moving away to European platforms, the fediverse is simply unknown at institutional level, nobody seems to know it exists. So I'm not disputing that all institutions should be on it, I'm calling bullshit on GERMANS reacting to someone who's told them for years what dependency on the US meant (the military dependency is key to everything) like their shit doesn't stink.
@szbalint
This meme doesn't work in this case. Emmanuel Macron is not a poor peasant plowing under his charge by any mean. If he tells everyone that to follow the Elysée's news, you have to get a mastodon account, people will.
@fingolas

@szbalint @fingolas
He doesn't deserve this joker of kindness and nuance.

During all these years, he purposely mocked people who where in no position to easily change things and specialized himself in telling one thing and doing the opposite : his "en même temps... " (=At the same time...) politic.

Furthermore, the Elysée's website has gone through many change during his presidency, and he tried so hard to create this "start-up nation" image on every streaming app 🫠! So he is really aware of these contradictions and embraces them himself but criticizes them in every over human behavior.

@fingolas they must do more than speak however they must also speak more
@fingolas @CiaraNi Yes. Governments have to take a lead in this. At the minimum they should set up Mastodon instances and encourage local government to do likewise.
@baoigheallain @fingolas Agreed. It seems both obvious and critically important at this stage, and yet governments are slow to even show signs of understanding the need to be independent of Big Tech and to share information with their own citizens and residents independently of Big Tech. I cannot get over the fact that our government and politicians and police etc here are still using X for public information.
@fingolas Would the presidency adding a Mastodon button to link to the French government's server here make Germany magically stop buying American weapons and keeping all of Europe tethered into its American dependency (as it did to Russian gas for a while)?

@Mnemosinee
Of course it wouldn't make that happen. I guess we can't do ANYTHING until that is corrected, then?

@fingolas

@xinit @fingolas No, we can and should always DO things. But think of it as a pyramid of needs. If your house has no roof and also broken windows and you only have enough money to fix the broken windows right now, sure, do fix them. But until you build a roof, you'll still get rained on.

The original post is tonedeaf as it's coming from tonedeaf atlanticists who treated him like an apostate for years for telling them the truth. He wants to build the roof.

@Mnemosinee Thanks. On re-reading my response, I could have been a little less.
@xinit noooo, not you, I meant the original post, will edit.
@Mnemosinee Oh no, not accusing you - I was a bit "Twittery" in my response. I try to catch that before posting :D

@fingolas

Well the same behavior for most politicians and governmental institutions in Europe btw, so not only him. This default needs to change… open source, distributed and regulated.

Well. An addict is well placed to warn about addiction.
@fingolas Mais Monsieur Macron, votre gouvernement soutiendra-t-il la Fediverse ?
@fingolas At least a small penny has fallen—perhaps, and hopefully, with consequences now.

P.S. That a case where I'd love to be able to share the previous post I shared with a quote. I wish @Vivaldi can update its Mastodon instance soon.

@fingolas Ha! We cannot quote the post with a reference to our letter to European politicians.
@fingolas "qui aurait pu prédire?"
@fingolas ingenuos? Más bien vagos, incompetentes, cortos de miras e irresponsables.
@fingolas Fascists don't like the last democratic, open, free speach place that remains and that's not submitted to their Propaganda bullshit.
