If everyone was refusing to provide official IDs to verify their identity and age on social platforms, and just let their account rot there unused instead, we would soon see platforms themselves starting to advocate against these invasive laws to recover their users.

Just saying.
They need you more than you need them.
Stop complying with invasive requests.

#Privacy #AgeVerification

@Em0nM4stodon even if you're an adult, they will still likely lose your ID in a data breach. Do you want Identity theft because of a silly website?
@fluffykittycat
@Em0nM4stodon I left my linkedin account to rot instead of giving in to a demand of official ID.
@Em0nM4stodon Indeed. Make #ageVerification, #chatControl, and other excuses to tie offline identity to online accounts go the way of #Disney after the #JimmyKimmel situation.
@deFractal @Em0nM4stodon because if the network effects more people are fusing comply makes it easier for the next one to do it.

@Em0nM4stodon Agreed! Heck, I never even give my name or phone number.

There's no way I'm going to upload my ID.

PS. It's bad enough when credit bureaus (which affect mostly everyone, unless you're off the grid) get hacked and your info gets out there. I'm not going to help my info get leaked.

@ahimsa_pdx @Em0nM4stodon SAME!
If i could, i would always give virtual credit cards, email aliases and redirecting numbers.
Because, why should i trust you, with information that can and will be used to identify me, before you even give the service?
(Sadly, i can't do redirecting phone numbers and virtual credit cards :(( )
@Em0nM4stodon exactly my take with discord, albeit I'm waiting out their 2 year auto delete countdown
@Em0nM4stodon or proxy or VPN your requests via an IP address associated with a free country? They will see fewer connections from oppressive regimes and more from the more obscure countries that don't demand everyone is tracked.
@Em0nM4stodon I say fuck 'em. Let 'em bleed.
@Em0nM4stodon My story: I changed my FB pw (done regularly over the years) but this time FB required 2FA. Seems I'd done it but no one ever asked so I forgot and deleted my 2FA. When FB demanded it, I tried to restore my 2FA but FB has to ok it. Neither FB nor 2FA has a human to fix this. Now FB wants a 180-deg selfie of my face for ID (I don't even use my own photo on FB). See Auschwitz Memorial on social media: that's what the Nazis did to prisoners--profile, front, & an angle. No way.
@Em0nM4stodon Well, that's certainly where my Twitter account is (they won't let me log in unless I provide a date of birth, and I can't be arsed to keep track of *yet* *another* fake DoB).
@Em0nM4stodon laughing in being trans and having to provide id to corrrect data
@Em0nM4stodon
More generally, just stop complying.
@Em0nM4stodon that wont happen though....
@Em0nM4stodon That is what I have done on several... Facebook never asked though, xbox asked, but then said I didn't need to (probably because my account is over 20 years old)
@Em0nM4stodon Give them a fake or nothing.
@Em0nM4stodon Remember, on ad-supported platforms, you are NOT the customer. You are the product that is being sold to the real customer -- the advertisers.
@zenkat @Em0nM4stodon
Remember too that this is also true of paid platforms.

@Em0nM4stodon MS just told me when I turned on my Xbox in the first time in forever that I need to either submit a photo of my ID or let AI scan my face to confirm my age or I'll lose access to 'social features'.

Okay? I've never once thought "Let me turn on my XBox to see what the person I played Forza with 10 years ago is up to"

@Em0nM4stodon In addition, everyone should block their platforms and tracking solutions via DNS filters and chase the email addresses into the spam filter.
@Em0nM4stodon The moment fb asked me my ID card or passport to verify an account I had made I just gave up... What are they supposed to be to ask for this kind of data? To verify what? And I even dislike it when I am asked about my phone number... Why on earth do people casually give away info like that? "I don't have anything to hide" is not even an answer....

@nakdim @Em0nM4stodon They always leave the important bit out. They dont have anything to hide RIGHT NOW.

That is why I live by the idea that I have nothing to hide, and I'll be god damned if anyone finds out.

@Em0nM4stodon

been doing that forever

after all, there are other options

@Em0nM4stodon exactly this in combination with that:

"In late 2019, Meta began an experimental “deactivation study” to measure what would happen with users if they randomly asked people to stop using their social media products. Pilot tests of the study found that a week without Facebook improved user well-being, prompting Meta to halt the study and never publish the results" https://www.nationalreview.com/news/meta-researchers-privately-compared-instagram-to-addictive-drug-bombshell-court-filing-shows/

@Em0nM4stodon I haven't been asked for ID to verify my age on any websites or accounts. My understanding is it's mostly for "mature" content, especially of a sexual nature.

As a gray asexual, if a fourteen year old can't see it, I don't want to.

It's also invasive, but for me it's mostly the above.
