Picking my next read. What will it be? Sometimes I read the first few pages and see what grabs me.

@girlbandgeek

I haven't read any of them, but look forward to seeing which one you choose.

@jemmesedi I’m going to go with Barabara Kingsolver’s Unsheltered. It’s going to have many parallels to my life - economic uncertainty and worries about my house falling apart 😭 But for whatever reason it’s the one that called to me after reading a few pages.

Kingsolver is one of Dawn’s favorite authors, and I read two of her books this summer. She is a fabulous writer

I am so sorry to hear about these worries. Anxieties like this can be so draining.

I hope your reading will take your mind off these worries.

Unfortunately, I don't keep up with contemporary fiction, so I am not at proud to say that I have never read any Barbara Kingsolver.

Could you or Dawn recommend a title for a first timer?

@jemmesedi I would start where I did, with her first novel The Bean Tree. It has an equally great sequel, Pigs in Heaven. She really has it all - great characters, deep themes, a great ear for dialogue, and beautiful command of language 💯

@girlbandgeek

Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll keep my eye out for "The Bean Tree".

@girlbandgeek

So I popped into my nearest secondhand bookshop today and was delighted to discover they had a copy of "The Bean Trees", which I have just started. Thanks!

@jemmesedi Oh, that’s great. I thought that was such a brilliant book. Hope you like it!
