This feels like a really stupid thing to do.. again Strava.

Strava is pretending that all the data we, as users, export from OUR devices is theirs. My data is tracked by my Garmin, uploaded to Strava. It's my data, created by Garmin.

Erm. I really don't want to use Strava anymore.

They started this shit a year ago by denying athletes from sharing their training data with their coaches. I don't have a coach, but the shit smelled miles away. I dropped Strava then.

I just found out Strava has not only blocked the link to DC Rainmaker's critique to their acts to enshittify Strava, but apparently even mentioning DCR at all. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2024/11/stravas-changes-to-kill-off-apps.html #Strava

@lehtimaeki I enjoy browsing through other people's rides and giving likes, but yeah, seeing those shenanigans is starting to put me off.

Same for komoot

@lehtimaeki @mastodonmigration So… I’ll have to speed up my vibe coding of a calendar app that will show pictures from a chosen day, complete with a gpx-track overlayed on OpenStreetMap. No feature for sharing with friends, but maybe I’m getting old enough to survive without kudoses.

Strava's value, to me, is in discoverability. I recently moved to a new town and being able to connect to others here has been very vulnerable. That's also their staying power. Even if there was technically comparable solution, it's worthless without people.
Still, I wish someone would try.

@lehtimaeki

The fun part is that users hand over data from Garmin – which does not share this data with third parties – to Strava, which does share the data and uses it to train AI.
And now Strava wants Garmin to take all devices off the market, even though the majority of Strava users are actually based on Garmin devices.

Sounds like a pretty stupid move 🍿🤡

@lehtimaeki the kerfuffle seems to have started from Garmin insisting on advertising with data obtained from a Garmin device, Strava's argument is the same as yours, your data belongs to you. Or this could of course simply by Strava's side of the story 🤷‍♂️ https://lifehacker.com/health/strava-sues-garmin-over-segments-and-heatmap-features
Strava Sues Garmin Over Segments and Heatmap Features

Strava's lawsuit claims patent infringement on two core features—segments and heatmaps—and alleges that Garmin violated a decade-old cooperation agreement between the two companies.
