Bike thefts at stations 'decriminalised'

The British Transport Police will not investigate many categories of bicycle theft, the BBC learns.

Needless to say this is the opposite of what we need for joined up, sustainable transport in this country and thefts from insecure bike racks outside stations is a huge barrier to bike commuting for a lot of people
@afewbugs Oh, FFS. Still, as long as the police treat drivers equally... Car gets nicked when it’s been parked for more than two hours? Tough.
@mattpedals
>20 years ago my car was taken from the car park at work. The police 'found' it a week later but only because it was on double yellow lines outside some flats and one of the occupants had reported it to them. It had been there all week without them noticing.
@afewbugs

@afewbugs So

Cycle to station
Lock bike up
Get train to work
Work
Return
Find bike is stolen
Get laughed at by BTP

@afewbugs I wish I had a job where I could declare doing my actual job was too difficult, so I'm not going to do my job so that I could do other tasks I consider more important.
@pmb00cs @afewbugs BTP aren't even investigating car thefts by stations (and then folk wonder why people would rather drive to the whole destination than take the train, as at least many car parks away from stations and private dwellings have better security)
@pmb00cs TBF, I've written quite a few self-assessments for annual performance reviews of the form "I didn't achieve all the objectives set out in last year's performance review, but I did achieve this list of extra things that I decided would be a good idea during the course of the year, so it all averages out to a satisfactory performance".
@only_ohm declaring "I didn't manage to do this thing because I ended up doing that thing instead" is not the same as "I won't do this thing because I think it's too hard". The BTP aren't apologising for their failure to investigate bike thefts with the things they did manage to investigate instead, they're saying they won't investigate bike thefts in future. The distinction is important.
@afewbugs Ridiculous. They say they want people to use an environmental form of travel, and then they won't protect your vehicle (car or bike) if left parked at the station. Anyone commuting to work is going to leave a vehicle at the station for more than 2 hours.
@UkeleleEric @afewbugs Whats also worrying is BTP aren't even complaining to the media that they lack resources/funding - which suggests they have given up even lobbying for it *and* they they are overwhelmed with other crimes such as hate crime (which has shot through the roof on the Elizabeth Line, in spite (or because?) of it going through one of the most multicultural areas of London and SE England) , robberies and other actual violence (which I can well believe is genuinely the case)
@afewbugs We went through this with the police here. It became clear that the idea of looking (eg) first at the 8-hour mark in 16 hours of CCTV to see if the bike was still there, then at either the 4- or 12-hour mark, and so forth, was some kind of sorcery beyond their comprehension.
