Good morning #CamperConversion or #DIY or #Crafting friends

I'm making curtains for #PaddyTheCaddy and have 2 windows where the metal frame is hidden behind trim, so I can't use neodymium magnets to hold the curtains like on the other windows.

I've improvised a curtain rod using a length of bamboo cane (which grew in my garden!). The system works but the bamboo has natural variation along its length. I want something which is dead straight and does not bend.

I need it to be 70cm long and around 6mm thick. I need two.

Ideally I'd like to go to a shop and look at what I'm buying. I've seen online shops selling various nylon or acetal rods but they tend to come in 50cm or 1m lengths and postage can be expensive.

Do craft shops sell something like this? Is there a DIY product that would do the job?

I'll check in Wickes today, as I happen to be going there, but I know that B&Q does plain wooden circular cross-section rods of varying diameters and that can be cut down to 700mm.

At least it did the last time that I was looking for one, which was a couple of years ago. There was a special display at the back of the shop in the B&Qs in the Big City. There's now a B&Q in the nearby Town (it having taken over the erstwhile Homebase site).

These places do explicit plastic curtain rails as well, of course, but my experience is that pre-made shelving and railing is never *quite* the right size and doesn't cut to fit.

@JdeBP Oh! Thank you! When I looked for dowel (online) I only found the small dowels that you put in joints to strengthen them. I couldn't find longer lengths. Those 2 B&Q examples look like they may be perfect.

I feel a bit daft now but it shows how 2 people, given access to the same internet, find different things! 😄

It's only sort-of the Internet in my case. I might have browsed the odd #DIY store in my time. (-: You have to pull the rods out of a special storage rack with deep slots.

#Homebase had similar.

#Jewson's 2400mm rods are probably overkill, and my nearby Jewson is a lot less geared towards casual non-trade customers just going in and browsing so I've not really seen its rod collection in person.

@JdeBP Thanks for reminding me about Jewson. I don't think I've ever been there as they're tucked out of the way and I can generally get what I need from Wickes (nearby) or B&Q (bigger and further away).

Having just seen the price Jewson is charging for a sheet of marine ply, I'll be buying it from my local woodyard!
