...yeah, I don't think a service that generates an endless stream of AI slop videos is a good use of the tech 🤢

It's sad to see OpenAI miss the opportunity to build a viable, healthier, bigger alternative to Twitter.

Especially when it comes to following AI progress, since it is basically impossible to have nuanced conversations about it here (Bluesky is slightly better), I find it very odd that all of OpenAI's employees (including Altman) are just…posting content on the social network owned by the guy suing them.

🤷‍♂️

@viticci Why is it hard to have nuanced conversations?
@niclake @viticci it's really not hard to find people responding to anything vaguely related to AI here *very* strongly... often harassing anyone that uses it regardless of purpose
@fantinel Why? What are their strong opinions?
@viticci Agree. The AI naysayers here on Mastodon are many and strident. Which surprised me. Not that AI has no downsides, but the discussion should be more nuanced and informed.
@patwood @viticci It seems like you’re implying that anyone who dares criticise AI must not be informed.
@patwood @viticci “The fascism naysayers here on Mastodon are many and strident. Which surprised me. Not that fascism has no downsides, but the discussion should be more nuanced and informed.” 🙄
@patwood @viticci A handful of billionaires have declared themselves owners of all works of humankind, and are seeking to eliminate the need for hundreds of millions of jobs as quickly as possible, destabilising society while they flee to their bunkers in New Zealand. You can lick the nuance off their boots if you want, but I will not.
@whereami @viticci Not at all. There are many thoughtful, informed criticisms of AI. And those discussions are vital. But for a platform like Mastodon, full of developers and tech workers, the volume of “AI sucks”, “AI is a scam”, “AI always fails” comments is surprisingly high.
@patwood AI (or rather, the LLM tools branded as "AI" and shoved down our throats by every company) *does* suck. It adds minimal value at the expense of trillions of dollars, a lot of hard work by creators who were not compensated for it, and for what it's supposed to actually do well, it's a "Suggestion" at best.
@viticci We already have a site full of AI slop, Twitter exists, no need for them to build another one.
@viticci Sorry dude OpenAI would be just as bad as MusK.
@viticci They’ve probably realises how difficult it is to get traction for yet another social network, it’s already a fragmented sector.
@viticci it’s you and @simon having by reasonable but critical conversations about AI round here
@viticci in the US it is illegal not to post or advertise on Twitter.
