hot take, burning hot take, like, not to you who probably agree but to the companies who disagree: not only should it be easy and legal to jailbreak all your devices ... the "jail" shouldn't even exist, you should be able to install and uninstall any software without jailbreaking the device

this includes phones, tablets, consoles, smart appliances, and obviously computers

we took these general purpose machines and gave them machine colonialism 😬
@typeswitch People out here trying to build software slaves for their hardware plantations.
@typeswitch There are some regulatory issues around radios that make that untenable.

@ZDL @typeswitch I don't think the original post is about being able to run your own radio baseband firmware.

Plenty of Android device manufacturers ship devices with bootloaders that can be unlocked from the settings menu, allowing you to flash any kernel and userspace you want. No regulatory issues there.

Very few users are affected by not being able to run their own radio firmware, but many are affected by being unable to run apps that Apple refuses to bless.

@typeswitch I really used to believe that some amount of a jail was useful for protecting regular “I don’t care about details” users. I don’t have a good solution for protecting them but I no longer believe that the jail helps that issue so… this is awkward.

(I agree that the jail shouldn’t exist but I wish we had a good story to protect uninformed users)

@griotspeak
I sometimes find myself thinking having fewer (or indeed few) users would be perfectly okay. If someone's not interested in owning a piece of tech, any kind of tech at all, it should be viable and easy for them to make such a decision.
@typeswitch
@ozzelot @griotspeak @typeswitch jep there’s definitely wayyyyy to much Digitalzwang (german for forced use of a digital service) out there …
@trisschen
I'm adding Digitalzwang to my vocabulary.
@griotspeak @typeswitch
@typeswitch If only there were funny Rossmann emojis on this instance..
