Mmmm, let's see if this wonderful #PrivacyCamp25 panel with @parismarx, @alexandrageese, Zuzanna Warso, @eliza and @Ambersinha is able to deconstruct the sadly dominant #Eurostack / #BuyEuropean narrative...
Ha Zuzanna Warso from @openfuture starts off with strong words: "Venture Capital is dangerous, it's toxic, it destroys the economy." #PrivacyCamp25
Okay, MEP @alexandrageese seems to agree that the #Eurostack approach risks giving us "more of the same" toxic tech, or something even worse. And that a #BuyEuropean conditionality has no guarantee that the new tech actually works for the public good. #PrivacyCamp25

@alexandrageese: Social media requires #advertising to fund itself.

#Fediverse: Hold my beer.

#PrivacyCamp25

Important point from @superrr's @eliza: When we focus on technology and centre the discussion around it, rather than on people, we fall into the #BigTech trap.

Asks what our own vision for public interest tech, what do we mean when we say we want to build something "better than #Facebook."

#PrivacyCamp25 #TechWontSaveUs

@parismarx arguing that #DigitalSovereignty should not be about European companies selling more stuff to #Brazil or countries in #Africa, but about how can we jointly build new #technology in the public interest?

He's also making a strong point in favour of blocking digital services that do not abide by local rules, citing #Brazil as positive example. Points also at federated social media as an important approach to take into consideration local laws.

#PrivacyCamp25

Europe doesn't have a good solution yet about how to condition the payment of public funds to industry (like startups) to ethical behaviour (like building #opensource, #privacy-preserving, or decentralised tech), says @alexandrageese.

#PrivacyCamp25

@ilumium @alexandrageese few public institutions have good track record when it comes to infrastructure PPP, so intangible things like #opensource are going to be even more difficult. The key, iny opinion, is to develop expertise is the subject: whether it is transit, bridges or open-source. That means doing it.
