Of course, there was the obligatory question about my sexual preferences. Why on earth they need to know where I like to insert myself is beyond me. Why does that matter when looking at a scrap of paper with some writing on?

#VandA

@dick_turpin they need to know their audience just in case a straight white man visits.

I don't really see the point of all these surveys, but it's probably to target their advertising.

@steevc Some of it, I get. After all, I'm in sales, and the data will help identify what they're doing right and what they're doing wrong. I just don't accept that there's a valid metric for knowing someone's sexual preferences.

I find it hysterical that people bang on about how we should all be treated the same, and then, with the next breath, look to single out groups.

I'm even more confused by their wanting to know if you came from specific boroughs, such as Tower Hamlets.

@dick_turpin maybe they did specific marketing in those areas. I give up on some surveys like the Sainsbury's ones that want to know how you liked every bit of the shop. Even if there's a chance of a prize it's not worth my time.

@steevc Yeah, I know what you mean. Mind you, with the Digital ID and face and fingerprint storage coming on stream, they won't need surveys anymore:

"Oh look, there's Steve buying cheap Y fronts again."

@dick_turpin I was just reading that Amazon are shutting down their shops that track what you buy. All the cameras plus AI can collect so much data about us. Welcome to the future.

@steevc They're shutting down Amazon Fresh because they couldn't get enough people to buy guava fruit, and who wants to wait until the next day for Brussel sprouts?

TBF, supermarkets have been using facial recognition since around 2019, it's just I don't think a lot of people realise or care what's going on when they see that TV screen in the entrance that whacks a green square around your face when you walk in and not forgetting the facial camera at the self-service.

@dick_turpin I've never been to an Amazon shop. I've seen the cameras at self scan, but they are mainly trying to catch people who try to cheat it. Stealing from shops is generally a big problem.
@steevc Do shoplifters use the checkouts at the self-service?
@dick_turpin They may put some cheap item through as there may be barriers that require swiping a receipt. I know people who have worked in retail and I hear stories.
