@pooserville that reminds me of this:

"In 1839 the third volume of the parochial history appeared, containing an account of the Roman wall; in it Hodgson first clearly established the claim of Emperor Hadrian to be considered as its builder; notably, as the claim isn't a claim on Northumbrian history, it is formatted as a 166-page footnote in the book, taking up about half the book's length. @Faintdreams @pooserville That's wonderful! It reminded me of Charles Darwin's 4 volumes on barnacles, two on fossil and two on extant species: https://darwin-online.org.uk/EditorialIntroductions/Richmond_cirripedia.html.

@pooserville Golden age of naturalist writers.
@pooserville I am surprised that no one has complained about the change in colour for the binding leather. That seems to me to be a massive irritant! Unless there is some change in the colour of the ferns discussed in Vol 1–3 vs 4–8, I would like to know WTAF are they NOT the SAME COLOUR‽ Jeepers!!
@IanAMartin Since the bottom of the lighter books’ spines matches the darker books I suspect they were originally the same color and they were faded by sunlight or something similar.
@pooserville
Darwin studied earthworms for 40 years. He played music to them and wrote his last book all about it.
Neuro-typical, right?

@pooserville @CGdoppelpunkt The ebook version is not nearly as satisfying as the print but for those whose bathrobe pockets are lacking quite that much spare change, the Biodiversity Heritage Library has you covered: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/108777#page/10/mode/1up. (Also saves shelf space.)
