Seriously, of the 100+ confirmed and 250+ estimated deaths at the #BlueHole in #Dahab NONE were "unavoidable"...

Rules exist for a reason:

I've dived about a dozen times at the #BlueHoleDahab but I wasn't 'suicidal', and stayed above 40m.

  • Because it's not worth dying for that shit!

EVERY SINGLE DIVER WHO WENT DOWN THERE I've met told me it's underwhelming af.

  • Like shure it's bragging rights for #TechDivers to have a "triple digit dive" (>100m) or even "double triple digit drive" (>100m & >100min total dive time) at that place but all you see at the bottom is silt, dropped lead belts, and dead bodies stuck in crevices...

After all the nice part isn't the actual blue hole, but the outside reef where you have beautiful corals at 5-25m depth and excellent visibility.

@kkarhan

I guess some will simply never get why we love small, shallow freshwater lakes (bustling with life, usually) vs. deep, crystal clear mountain lakes (boring af, mostly) or snorkeling at the house reef.

Best so far? Whale shark was following the bubbles from our group to the boat, we got rid of the gear fast for petting our new friend a bit. Dove down underneath from tail to head. Remoras attached? Nope! Spread and reattached like a ballet.

@GNUmatic I mean I know how to get my adrenaline pumping, but duing random shit that can end deadly ain't it!

@kkarhan

The jerk was ruZZian, wasn't he. I fucking swear all the unhinged guys at various dive destinations so far were. All of 'em! /o\

Ocean? Water in general? Ain't made for us. Ain't the place for adrenaline. Can get you a darwin award pretty fast if you're out there just for bragging rights by showing off utterly pointless numbers on your stupid dive computer.

Oh! And fuck all the male tec divers who can't hold their breath for just half a minute!

@GNUmatic @kkarhan And this thread just went really bizarre. Are you guys real humans?

Why do “male tec divers” in particular need to hold their breath above an arbitrary limit? Why does that not apply to other genders? In what conditions do you dive where you need to hold your breath for more than 10-20s?

You’re both as toxic as the people you describe.

@teotwaki @GNUmatic m8, check the reality...

  • You'll have trouble finding the name of the only woman that is said to have died in a diving accident at the #BlueHole in #Dahab, but you can easily come up with 2 dudes (Yuri & James) that died there.

Almost as if #ToxicMasculinity & #FragileMasculinity is a real problem!

#sarcasm #EOD

@kkarhan @GNUmatic No obviously, I’m not disagreeing with the fact that men are much more likely to be thrill seekers.

This being said, there’s statistically much fewer women who dive (because of the trait you described), therefore it’s also reasonable that much fewer women died at Dahab, no?

The most badass, competent and adventurous divers I’ve personally met were women though. So not sure what that says about thrill seeking.

The most careless were men.

@teotwaki @GNUmatic Granted I don't deny the gender disparity there either, but then again it's obviously based off the fact that diving got started in construction and naval units, so like female firefighters and motorcycle policewoman, they are more of an exception than norm.

  • Tho not as extreme as there are a lot of maritime biologists that do at some point get certified as divers just to be able to collect samples and do field research themselves…
