I'm curious as to how my #actuallyautistic comrades deal with #techinterviews ?

I find them challenging, In spite of the interviewer often also being obvsly also on the spectrum.

One dimension of it is, that I can mask less to divert more cognitive bandwidth to the task, but that has a social cost which is dependant on how high or low masking the counterparty is.

Also if they happen to be low masking but Also emotionally disregulated, it puts me in an awkward & emotionally laborious position

@marytzu I didn't interview since my knowing & diagnosis of autism. But I've known for a while that I'm anxious. Sometimes I will open that, if I feel it's necessary and possible. Like, just saying that it's stressful to code live in front of strangers will put everyone at ease.

Humour and maybe a bit of self derision, if you can do it, can do wonders in those situations.

I was always completely drained after them, though. Now i know why! So for my next one, ill plan an easy day before and after, if possible, to give my best masked performance! 🎭

@f_o_tistic tysm for sharing. I might try that strategy as well. Make a joke about playing (coding) for an audience haha.

I'm always completely wiped out after a tech interview. I often have a hard time sleeping in spite of the exhaustion too. I just can't turn my brain off. The night before I also have to take a sleeping pill otherwise the anxiety/anticipation keeps me up all night.

And then ofc during the interview im running on adrenaline.

@f_o_tistic so yes, definitely all for an easy day before and after. That's what I try to do too.
@marytzu I hope you get what you're looking for!
