I love being accused of a bunch of things.

😂

I'm still going to put out an update, that I work on, in my free time, for free.

Though, it's probably going to be my last one.

It has nothing to do with people like the one quoted. I've made software for 20+ years, I've run into neck beards like this in real life.

In the past 8 months I've decided to live life more in person than virtually.

Thanks again for everyone who has contributed, it has been a fun hobby.

🙅 Dentro hilo! 🧵

I'm sincerely grateful that my livelihood isn't tied to the whims of people who want to spark controversy where there is none.

I feel sad for any other indy fediverse developer who gets harassment like this otherwise.

Maybe that's another reason this place never received much traction? Idk. I won't speculate.

Cheers.

I'll probably still keep paying the bills behind the project to keep it running for a good long while.

Then one day, like a Sand Mandala, if will disappear.

@trunksapp hey, dude, I completely see your point, and I will not ask you to continue supporting it at any rate... your application is one of the best Mastodon clients around and yet I also understand what you wrote... take care!

... And big thanks for all the fish!

@trunksapp

Sorry you've been on the receiving end of such shite. I've used Trunks for quite some time now and it's still, by far, my favourite.

I can only hope that other apps incorporate at least some of its features in due course.

Sorry, @trunksapp but you were the one who said your software is “free” but not open source. Here’s the issue where I asked you: https://github.com/trunks-social/trunks-public/issues/335

Therefore, it’s not open source, it’s proprietary software. As a user, I have no idea what your Mastodon client is actually running.

What feels dishonest is that you even expect users to report issues and help you with translations without offering any transparency.

Sorry if your idea was just to take advantage of the community.

Source code and license information not found · Issue #335 · trunks-social/trunks-public

Hello, I have been looking for the source code of this application but couldn’t find it anywhere. There is also no information available about the license under which it is distributed. Although th...

GitHub

@t3rr0rz0n3 free doesn't mean open source, on what planet would it mean that?

Free means you don't pay for it.

@trunksapp If you don't pay for a software because it's "free", that doesn’t make it open source — it means it's proprietary. Is that clear or not?

On GitHub I explicitly asked you about the license and the source code. Your only reply was: "It's free but not open source."

So the closest to your own definition is that your app is Freeware software.

That still means that you — and only you — can see the code, while nobody else can.

Is that clear enough, or should I draw you a picture??

@t3rr0rz0n3 I honestly have no idea how you came up with these rules. I nver claimed this was open source. Your statements are libelous accusations at this point. I sincerely hope you recognize that you're just being a dick.

@trunksapp Look, do whatever you want and think whatever you like. What’s clear is that your app is not free/libre software , which means you don’t respect your users.

Your app requires 29 permissions on Android — are we insane here? 🤦 🤯

In any case, it’s you who must prove what your app actually does. To do that, you can simply publish the code.

I honestly hope you realize that you’re being dishonest and that you’re taking advantage of people.

Have a good day.

@t3rr0rz0n3 You're the one saying I made claims I never did. I never said it was open source. Free literally means you don't pay for it. I called you out on it and now you're just being a dick.
@trunksapp WHAT? I never said your software was open source. I’ve always said it’s "free" and I've always said it's proprietary.
@t3rr0rz0n3 you said I misled people based on calling it free. Where is your proof?

@trunksapp Go to https://xarxa.cloud/@t3rr0rz0n3/115260593156002583

Just to be clear, this is not an attack — at least not from my side. I’m simply saying that if there’s no access to source code of an application, for me that app stops being secure, because it doesn’t comply with licenses like GPL or even more permissive ones like MIT.

I was only pointing out something I personally consider important. You can keep giving your apps away for free if that’s what you prefer (which is totally legitimate, by the way).

@t3rr0rz0n3 you're claiming in there that I'm being dishonest. That is an accusation. You don't show how I'm being dishonest.

Open source software has license, distribution of that software is bound to that license.

Trunks is not open source, it doesn't have a license. Just because it isn't open source or have a license doesn't mean it's insecure or nefarious.

You're the one claiming that I'm misleading people, being dishonest, and creating shady software. That's an attack.

@t3rr0rz0n3 @trunksapp this whole thread is kind of sad and unnecessary. I wish for more positive vibes here 🌈
@trunksapp I'm feeling your pain 😅

@t3rr0rz0n3

Actually, you said it was "freemium". But given that there is no paid for "pro" version and there are no paid for extras, that's clearly not so.

I don't really understand your issue. If you don't like Trunks, don't use it.

I do, and I do.

@trunksapp

@ratcatcher Right, the exact term is Freeware: free to use, but proprietary software, since you don’t have access to the source code.

@t3rr0rz0n3

And the problem with that is?

@trunksapp

@ratcatcher There’s no problem at all. But it’s not an app I’m going to recommend. Is there any issue with that?

@t3rr0rz0n3

None at all. So why are you trying to wind up the developer?

@ratcatcher Sorry? I just expressed my opinion. I’m not trying to take anyone down. LMAO
@t3rr0rz0n3 don't you dare speak for me, I am satisfied trunks user – set your rules for your software and let other developers set their rules for their software and let us, users, decide what we want to use
@trunksapp

@trunksapp @t3rr0rz0n3 I’m sorry I’m failing to understand the wrong doing.

The app being free and he’s asking for volunteers to help with translation. That doesn’t by any stretch means it needs to be open source.

He never once claimed it was open source. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion but this one bewilders me ..

@trunksapp @t3rr0rz0n3

I don't see the "29 permissions" and the OP fails to list them.

This looks more like a classic Xitter clout posting rather than an advice

Report for com.decad3nce.trunks 1.4.2

Known trackers, permissions and informations about this specific version of this application

εxodus

@t3rr0rz0n3 ok, so, what permissions look suspicious to you?

A lot of them seem to be brand-specific to update notification badges.

Not defending trunks, I don't use it anymore, but again. Rather than the fact that the code is not open source, I don't see anything wrong with the app.

If your post is about "trunks is not open source", well that's it..

But you go beyond that by mentioning "29 permissions" without going further and explaining what's wrong with that.

@trunksapp wanted to send some love as I love trunks 🤜🤛

@trunksapp
I'll add my voice to the "we totally get it" choir and say that I've enjoyed using #TrunksApp as my window into the mastodon world. It's done everything I needed it to do and more...

Thanks for the ride!

@trunksapp some of us are morons. Please, if you abandon trunks, please please please release it as open source. Even if you close the repository and keep the name, let people fork it under a new name 🙏🙏🙏

@trunksapp

Well damn!

I completely understand. People making utterly unreasonable demands and making insane accusations will drive anybody to reconsider their choices.

Take the option that suits you best.

The only thing I ask is that you consider open-sourcing the code. This is by far the best Mastodon app I have tried, and that's it's provided for free is amazing. It's going to be a shame to lose it.

Still, it is, firmly and forever, your life.

Thanks for the hard work.

@trunksapp I enjoy Trunks, and have recommended it to others. Thank you. Guess I’ll be looking around again in a while…
@trunksapp
I've enjoyed your app since you released it. It has been nuch better than any others I've tried.
Some people are more interested in the controversy they can generate. They are unhappy when others ignore them.
