With this latest wind warning in Canterbury I have been thinking that we need a really good name for these nor'westers. After all there is the Santa Ana in California and the Sirocco in Europe.
My Te Reo is almost non existent but I have come up with:
Te manawa o taniwha
The breath of the taniwha.
I like it. What say you?

Locally, it seems to have been māuru (which also seems to have referred to the north-west arch) but there are also various references to "te hau kai tangata" the wind that eats people.
