Often when our list of Adobe alternatives is shared people comment that it's okay to pirate Adobe software. It's not, because that still supports Adobe through usage and staying in their ecosystem. Instead, do look into alternatives!

@kenney Platform lock in is one of the main reasons I hear people (mostly cartoonists) saying they can't switch from Adobe. If your publisher, editor, or printer are only willing to accept files in a given format, it becomes very hard to change tools. Which actually makes it kinda important for those of us who can change tools to do so.
@jwvhewitt @kenney What formats are those in the cartooning world that are Adobe specific?
@jfml @kenney Adobe Illustrator and PSD are often expected. Relatedly, scripts are often expected in MS Word format because of the revision tracking features.
@jwvhewitt @kenney Ah, yeah, Word is a knows offender here. I didn't think of companies wanting open files, you're right that happened to me in the past as well. Oh oh. I think Krita can handle .psd but of course doesn't have feature parity with PS and I think Inkscape is working on better support for (opening?) .ai but you're right we should focus on open alternatives when it comes to files as well. SVG when it comes to vectors probably not sure what would be best for raster images?

@jwvhewitt those arent formats, they are programs?
Libreoffice can fully edit and produce files in the same formats that Word does. Photopea can edit psd files. Inkscape can edit eps (Illustrator) files. They are compatible.

@jfml @kenney

@jwvhewitt Especially if the file formats asked for are closed source, lucky some Adobe software can or does support open-source alternatives (like glTF for 3D, or SVG for vector)
@kenney I have made the switch from #Adobe (Illustrator > #Inkscape, Indesign > #Scribus, very light Photoshop > #Krita / GNUImage) a few years ago (learned the alternatives first, then switched to #Linux as well) and I love it!
@jfml @kenney Is Scribus any good? The last time I looked at it, which admittedly was a few years ago, it was not good. And srsly, Quark as a replacement for Indesign? From the frying pan into a smaller frying pan.
@maccruiskeen @kenney I guess that depends on your definition of good ^__^ It has some very weird quirks (but then again Adobe software has a cubic boatload of those) and some things are veeery awkward (colours, objects in layers) but I've gotten quite used to it, have done a 24 page comic book, an 80 page booklet, business cards, flyers and a lot of other things with it over the past years. /cont.
@maccruiskeen @kenney I prefer Inkscape for rapid design / identity development but Inkscape's layout / text features are too limited for anything that is more than e few sentences.
@kenney Putting Autodesk as alternative for Adobe software is a weird choice though. While technically correct, their modus operandi is pretty similar
@kwramm Just listing alternatives
@kenney my gut feeling is that people who use closed source operating system tend to pirate more software, including the operating system

@kenney pirated old adobe for editing/adding text in pdf (and recognition if it works sometimes) and for managing pdf pages (sometimes need to delete page or re-arrange).

Would glad if someone pointed out which have those functions, but thanks for making and managing list of alternatives! When I was searching didn't stumble on it sadly.

@kenney
I agree completely, never pirate bigCorp software. That is helping them to continue their control.

What you should do is offer your time and support to help others use the alternatives.

I dont help folks work around issues with proprietary software. I just remind them that they paid good money to the corp and they should take it back and get a version that works.😉

@kenney Nice list, just a note: CorelDraw graphics suite has Photo Paint included, which is a Photoshop alternative.
CorelDraw is also a layout program so it can be used as an InDesign alternative.
And the suite is available for a one time fee (not too expensive) or subscription.
