My daughter’s school are really doubling down on the School Street this term 😊😊😊😊

“May I remind parents other than Disabled Badge Holders that ******** Road is closed to cars from 8.30am to 9.10am each day. Please park away from school.”

#SchoolStreet #ActiveTravel #cycling #walking

@wlukewindsor nice! When my kids were at primary, the head teachers response to my request to ask the council to turn the (rat run) street the school's on into school street was "there's no need because we send stern emails to parents about pavement parking" 🙄
@Pionir they are really trying, with some success, and the disabled access take is a new one, as parents were abusing the disabled parking spaces all last year - a staff member stands at the end of the road and tries to manage access which is nit easy
@wlukewindsor Amazing – our local council (now run by Reform) refuse to contemplate school streets.
@mattpedals we don’t have Reform here at all and there’s some good local green politics influencing the school (small but important victory given what happened to our LTN trial)
@wlukewindsor Meanwhile the road outside our local high school is so clogged with parents dropping kids off that the bus company now refuses to send services down it and there have recently been two near misses involving children and drivers. The school’s response? Put out a statement blaming children for not crossing the road properly.

@mattpedals the road next to our School street is a nightmare which an LTN was specifically designed to solve - the LTN was eventually canned by the local labour folk (supported by a LD parliamentary candidate) to appease a minority of local pro-car ‘activists’. Local green candidate won a huge vote swing accordingly (he campaigned on this single issue) - not enough to affect the outcome but a signal that there were more in favour of radical street solutions than against. Which we all knew, everyone was terrified, police had to attend local meetings because of the threats of violence from the petrolhead minority. Awful.

But the School street survives!

@wlukewindsor around these parts that translates to "please take your chaos to neighbouring streets, that families are using to arrive at the school street" 😀
@FourT4 well it would all have worked well if the LTN hadn’t been canned here - but the majority of the parents arrive on foot or by bike/scooter anyway which is really unusual I know but a model to aspire to everywhere
@wlukewindsor quite! <stares pointedly at local families>
