Trump regime now requires press to sign a document agreeing not to obtain or possess "unauthorized" information.

Anyone who agrees to this is not qualified to call himself or herself a journalist.

But I'm betting most Big Journalism orgs will go ahead and sign.

@dangillmor

To be fair, if I were planning to acquire and then spill all kinds of unauthorised state secrets that it was in the public interest to have in the public eye, I would sign that in an instant just to get the security clearance needed to get my grubby mitts on them.

I suspect that will not be the motivation the brown-nosers have for signing though.

@dangillmor But it does illustrate why these sort of loyalty oaths are useless. The creeps would be loyal without them, and the loyally disloyal like me would sign anyway to get on the inside. And, of course, genuine bad actors would have even less qualms about it all.

@CrypticMirror (though there might be some fine print deep in the documents about waiving your rights to a fair trial [and to due process] and pre-agreed fine of 200 mio bucks [with same policy regarding defaults as student loans] and death by hanging, drawing and quartering in cases of document leak*)

(**: unless by a Trump's apointee in a Signal group)

(Though, to be fair, they'll punish journalists the same way even if they didn't sign)

@dangillmor (Themself. “he or she”-type wording makes me die inside a little bit every time i see it)

@dangillmor

1.
"Under the policy, the #Pentagon may revoke press passes for anyone it deems a security threat"

2.
"Possessing confidential or unauthorized information, under the new rules, would be grounds for a journalist’s Press Pass to be revoked"

That's 2 things that are unnecessary, imo.

A reporter can be canned for any (fake) reason and no reporter will publicly ask a question to #Trump on any hot topic or "confidential" topic anyway

🤪 "I'm going TELL THEM about you"

@dangillmor

Fascism is what you call it…

@dangillmor More straight up fascism. About time they re-branded Hegseth as War and Propaganda Secy, in line with the department. Fun fun fun every day in Trumpistan...
@dangillmor Wow, not only will they be forbidden to report on issues the Trump-regime does not authorise, but they will not even be allowed to possess such information. What if they do, erase their memories? That's beyond censorship! #freedomofspeech #freedomofpress
@dangillmor Whether or not a specific piece of information is "unauthorized" will be determined after the fact based on the Trump regime's desire to attack a particular reporter.

@dangillmor

Does that mean journalists will not be allowed in the bathrooms at Mar-a-Lago?

@dangillmor

Trump regime now requires press to sign a document agreeing not to obtain or possess "unauthorized" information.

Any mention of Epstein Trump relationship will of course be unauthorized.

Alligator Alcatraz and unmarked mass graves are waiting for those who do not bow to the Orange King

@dangillmor

Exposing Watergate would presumably have been impossible under such an agreement?

@FediThing @dangillmor
'Natch.

And this "document", once signed, makes "embedded" reporters look like Woodward and Berstein.

Remember "embedded" reporters...? That was the true beginning of the end of journalism.

9-11 hastened the demise. There's been precious little REAL journalism since 2001.

@dangillmor I guess this would crumble if any press org challenged under 1st amendment.

Not expecting the tyrant loving press core to challenge

@ozzy wouldn't bet on current SCOTUS doing the right thing, though...

@dangillmor
“Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed, everything else is Public Relations.” – (Attributed to) George Orwell

So basically Trump has just completely outlawed journalism.

@dangillmor
By now, it should be clear to everyone that democracy in the US has come to an end.

And due to extreme divisions in society, there will be even less potential for cohesion.

Sad.

@dangillmor as a journalist, I would absolutely sign that to get all the information I could, but then I would turn over the getting and distributing of the unauthorized information to one of my colleagues working for the same company. A journalist's signature may bind the journalist, but it doesn't bind his company. And I would get the company's lawyers involved and share everything with them because you know the company is going to challenge that in court if it's ever called. And the company will win because first amendment.

@dangillmor

Factual information will be unauthorized. See EPA.

@dangillmor
"If the facts don't fit the theory, (ignore and/or) change the facts." seems to be awfully relevant in the US these days.
