I'm a computer programmer with a Fediverse account, and I am this many years old.

Please consider boosting for a more representative sample.

@rperezrosario wait what, we're supposed to put our age not guess yours?
@CartyBoston Welcome to the 41+ club :-).

@rperezrosario @CartyBoston yeah, I'm over 50 and I must say, my life changed a lot in the past 10 years, so it's a completely different category.

As a senior engineer, I can take on most exciting projects, leaving the routine and boring stuff to the younger folks. I enjoy teaching and sharing the knowledge, and I've got much more of that than in my 40's. Also, as I earn more, I have more time for exploring the things that I just like to explore (for example, DIY electronics for the disabled, as we have sadly a huge number of injured people in Ukraine).

@rperezrosario

*looks at highest option*

*sighs deeply*

@marado @suetanvil @rperezrosario Is that simply the bracket for "I remember the world from before home internet was a thing, and programming was something you needed books to do"?

@rperezrosario @suetanvil @marado @skolima

Learned mainframe coding on a VT100 the hard way. I had a couple manuals, a green screen, a couple phone numbers I could call. 1987. They still had filing cabinets full of punch cards. Stacks of tapes in the corner no one could read. Fun times.

When I retired in 2020 I had a wall of books about programming environments, stats, and math. Nobody wanted ANY of them.

@marado

This is definitely more representative of the Fediverse demographics.

@suetanvil @rperezrosario

@mina @marado @suetanvil @rperezrosario

also if you were to expand the survey to those who aren't techies you will find the demographics skew even older (there's a lot of people in their 70s and above who joined Fedi over the last few years, particularly progressive-minded older folk from the USA and UK)

@marado @suetanvil @rperezrosario what about younger than 10 years? I don't think it's wise.. But who knows?

@marado @suetanvil @rperezrosario So who are the 4.57 81+? ;) We want to hear stories from the old times :-D
@rperezrosario
I suspect many of my feditribe can't even remember being 41.
@rperezrosario Sheesh, it cuts off at 41....
@penguin42 @rperezrosario last age poll on mastodon I participated in had most people reply with 45+
@penguin42 @rperezrosario So apparently cyclist skew older than programmers.
@LovesTha @penguin42 That seems to be the way things are.
@rperezrosario @LovesTha @penguin42
We're old and wise enough to not flock to another billionaire-owned platform, unlike perhaps the whipper-snappers 😂

@rperezrosario

Why include 10 yr olds?

@PChoate @rperezrosario Why exclude 9-year-olds? At lest we centenarians have a bucket, albeit a bucket we share with our grandchildren.

@kbob @rperezrosario

Sorry, it’s my stupid math brain. Those brackets form a series of numbers except for the 10 should be an 11. I used to write a lot of reports that included age brackets.

11-20 21-30 31-40 41+

The 10-year-olds don’t fit the pattern.

I thought the original poster might’ve had a reason that 10-year-olds are in there - something like “that’s when kids start coding now, in the fourth grade”.

Meet the 11-Year-Old Whose Code Was Adopted by a Gaming Giant

Damir Buldakov is an 11-year-old who developed a Scratch SDK plugin for Playgama that was officially adopted by the gaming giant.

@rperezrosario @PChoate
I was 13 when I started learning programming, in high school, which wasn't recently either

@SmartmanApps @rperezrosario

Around thirteen I was taught to use a slide rule. ;) Got a four function calculator in 7th grade! Later on a TI-59 I played line-command Lunar Lander as a teen.

When they came out I got a Commodore64 and taught myself basic and started modifying Snake and Gorilla. lol

@rperezrosario @PChoate because they damn wel qualify?

I learnt programming before I was ten, and I know two kids who acquired an LPI certification at ten.

@mirabilos @rperezrosario

Good for you.

Sorry about that, I didn’t mean to imply 10 year olds couldn’t program.

Frankly, I think the lowest category should be 1-10, and the categories should extend up to the age 100.

But I don’t think Mastodon polls allow more than four categories or something unless you play games with it.

I just like symmetry.

@PChoate @rperezrosario other Fediverse softwares can do more ;) but need to catch a train

@rperezrosario

This proves what Ive always said, we really are bunch of old farts...

@sleepy62 @rperezrosario Hell I’m also grumpy as well:)
@sleepy62 @rperezrosario It's more that old farts have had the experience to realise where value lies.
@rperezrosario The first time I was paid to program was longer ago than that. I was hired to write Fortran in 1973.
@MartyFouts My first paid job in computing saw me hired to write HTML and Perl for my local ISP in 1995. I was born two years after your Fortran adventure in 1973.
@rperezrosario can former programmers respond?
@Rajiv Of course.
@rperezrosario welp... we might need one more option on there then :D
@rperezrosario @Rajiv Another former one here - or semi-former anyway as I still write code now and then.
@rperezrosario included myself because I do write a good bit of code, mostly for mask layout, modeling, and data analysis, though I am not a software developer
@rperezrosario you are missing the <10 option. there are some computer programmers at that age, and the fediverse doesn't have an inherent minimum age requirement, so such users could feasibly exist.
@rperezrosario feel like this should have had a few more older categories...
@rperezrosario i bet you could have had both 61+ and 81+ and still get all populated at least a little
@rperezrosario I’m absolutely not a computer programmer but you have my sympathies, it must be terrible

@u0421793
Condolecences happily received

(I actually significantly reduced in recent years and not just because illness that's for sure. 😌)
@rperezrosario

@rperezrosario not a dev so didn't vote but i'm 51...
@rperezrosario
Thanks for the reality check, didn't expect that, TBH 😅
@rperezrosario 41 years of professional experience is approaching too quickly.

@Enema_Cowboy @rperezrosario So you started with puch cards.

Respect.
