Spent much of yesterday and today working on a set of subtitle #translation tests. It was kind of a lot of time & energy to spend on something that brings in 0 money at the moment, but the problem set was a lot of fun to work through and served as a crash course on using #SubtitleEdit (SE) to translate & create subtitles. In one day I went from not knowing anything about the software to installing it, learning the basics, and making a fully time-coded .srt file from scratch, so I consider that a win!

Being able to edit the .srt as a plain text file was especially versatile and convenient, since I could do a lot of the text editing in #Emacs while SE did the heavy lifting of validating character counts and CPS (characters per second) for segments. I've worked with a web interface to enter contests and seek subtitle work, but taking the extra effort to learn the subtitling process and tools was worth it for the new skills, extra confidence, and levels of control.
