In the UK we used to think Americans were a bit crass, a bit full of themselves but basically decent.

@pthane @CosmickTrigger on a good day that's probably fair

The truth is that the far right is actually a fringe movement. Their horrific ideas are held by a very small amount of Americans. The reason they seem so big and powerful is because they are the loudest group of people, and they don't care about the rules.

A better measure of where most Americans lie on the political spectrum is opinion polls.

Pew and Gallup polls show that 70 percent of Americans:

Support a woman's right to choose

Support protections for gay and transgender folks

Want sensible gun laws like having to take a test and get a license to own one and have gun insurance

Support overturning Citizen's United and banning money from politics

Support ranked-choice voting

Support legalization of pot and some psychedelics like shrooms and MDMA at the federal level

And pretty much everything on Bernie Sander's platform.

But most people already know the government is not going to help them or pass any of that.

Both parties both win AND lose because overwhelmingly the candidate who wins every election is "none of the above."

More people don't vote than do because they know their choices are ALWAYS going to be rigged towards a turd sandwich or a giant douche
