Light Mode this, Dark Mode that… not enough people are implementing Windows 3.1 Hotdog Stand Mode.

My first time going viral on the Fediverse.

I write electronic music of all kinds as @RaccoonFink. You should check it out.

@RangerRick @RaccoonFink 😂 it's funny, one of the first posts that took off for me here many years ago was about Hotdog Stand too. I'm just glad to see it's still so loved 😂🤣😂🤣
@jake4480 @RaccoonFink it’s definitely… something’d
@RangerRick I'm sorry, why do my eyes burn now? 😱
@vivien @RangerRick it's the mustard
@hosford42 @RangerRick don't put mustard in your eyes, kids!
@vivien @hosford42 @RangerRick OOPS TOO LATE!!! AAAAAGHHHH!!!
@travisfw @hosford42 @RangerRick OH NO!!! quick, rinse them with ketchup!!! 😵🫨😱
@vivien @hosford42 @RangerRick yess! such sugary salt forever in my red eyes!!!!
@travisfw @hosford42 @RangerRick gotcha, put some mayonnaise on the white part of the eye! Should fix the red eyes😁
@vivien @travisfw @hosford42 I am not a doctor, but please don’t do any of this
@RangerRick I thought you would say German Mode 🇩🇪
@RangerRick I always wondered if anyone actually used this. It feels like an Easter egg that wasn't hidden.
@RangerRick That's because you basically all but can't do that level of customization anymore. At the very least not in Windows.

@kawa @RangerRick This. It's still a lot worse than the Win3/9X days in the Linux world. In theory you could totally build a theme, but you better go figure out how to do that for GTK, and Qt, and maybe Plasma, and none of these are "pick colors in a GUI".

(The nutso one to me with KDE is that you can't even change your lock screen wallpaper without creating a new SDDM theme. Plymouth too, but at least being *able* to change the boot screen is a *high* bar there.)

@kawa @RangerRick Just gonna keep waving my banner on this hill that Hot Dog Stand was practical, accessible freedom, and the mockery it received over the years is probably one of the things that fed into designers trying to ensure you could never set your color scheme to anything ugly again, only choose a tasteful accent to very slightly personalize their design, if that.
@LionsPhil @RangerRick I'm sorry, you can't change WHAT without jumping through inane hoops?

@kawa Sorry, I mean the *login* screen, because obviously that's separate.

https://discuss.kde.org/t/changing-lockscreen-and-wallpaper-on-plasma-6/12267

And the answer is "uhhh copy the theme file somewhere and edit paths inside it, make sure not in your homedir", because someone decided to make all this fully scriptable and layout-controllable, which is admirable, but in the process broke "I can just select an image file and have that appear when my computer is waiting for the password".

Changing Lockscreen and Wallpaper on Plasma 6

Hi, I am trying to change the lock screen and wallpaper of KDE Neon Plasma 6 to something else instead of the default choices. I have changed the wallpaper via Right Click > Configure Desktop and Wallpaper, however, what I chose doesn’t change the Lock screen, and I can’t find any options for changing the lock screen. There’s also a bug where the second screen shows the default wallpaper of KDE Neon instead of what I chose. Unfortunately, the default options are not the best in my opinion, an...

@LionsPhil @kawa did that regress from KDE 5 to 6? I'm still on Debian 12 and changed that with 2 clicks & my admin password

@kgMadee2 took a while to be back on that device, but Debian 13/Plasma 6, it's all Themes now.

I'd love to be wrong, but if there's a plain image picker, I'm missing it (it's not under the three-dot menu). The "get new" store does not exactly inspire confidence either, with the whole "oh yeah these are arbitrary code execution by design". Yeah, bad design.

@LionsPhil thebl Breeze thumbnail should have 2 buttons when you hover over them, 1 info & 1 to select a background image
@LionsPhil what the bieep
I just set up a VM to check. Who removed that, and WHY? 😭
@kgMadee2 arrrgh, and for a second there I was hopeful I *had* just missed it

@kgMadee2 OK, I dug at this again now I'm Debianing the desktop, and it was a stupid fix for a stupid bit of WinDOS-y design to put user config in an install dir: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1090041

Which means, meh, write that conf file without the UI: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SDDM#Customizing_a_theme

@kawa

I don't know about Windows, but KDE Plasma still can! The old “color scheme” system from forever ago is still there.

@RangerRick

@argv_minus_one @RangerRick Windows still has its old 95-era color scheme system too, but nothing from the last 15 to 20 years is likely to use it.

The one exception I can think of is text highlights.

McDonalds Theme - Visual Studio Marketplace

Extension for Visual Studio Code - A delicious theme.

@RangerRick That theme is one of the first ones I implemented when I made my Windows Forms theme engine in 2017 because I was bored.
@RangerRick the red light preserves your night vision
@RangerRick I remember this abomination and remember asking "WHY?????".
@RangerRick It feels like a shitpost by MS.
@RangerRick Research has shown that Hotdog Stand Mode is the most efficient, boosting your reading speed by 80% compared to dark mode, and also improving your well-being, sleep quality, job-security and salary. What are we all waiting for!

@RangerRick

@ash
Ash, doesn't your personal website still have the Hot Dog Stand theme? 🌭

@DJDarren @RangerRick

@RangerRick I remember implementing Solid Magenta mode. 100% magenta; every pixel on the screen.
@RangerRick There was also a neon color scheme. I used that one daily, actually.

@RangerRick

This is a war crime, registering 0.6 on the Nickelback scale.

@TawdryHepburn @RangerRick That is the right scale for measuring obnoxious abominations.
@RangerRick my brain can't handle this colour combination, but I expect it would make your computer even faster!
@RangerRick
C'est largement plus lisible que le dernier thème d'iOS https://mastodon.social/@siracusa/115210755079098779
@RangerRick You can do it on Windows 11 or Server 2025:
@jernej__s @RangerRick I'll give it this, Hot Dog Stand certainly does make it easy to identify bits of your UI that have hard-coded color values that don't read from user preferences...
@alahmnat @RangerRick I don't think there are any hard-coded colours in those screenshots (not counting images) – I used High Contrast mode to set the colours, and the colours are intentionally like that (grey is intentional, because that's what the buttons looked like in 3.1's Hotdog Stand theme).
@jernej__s @RangerRick Ah, gotcha. The icons on the start menu having such a big gray background in particular made it look like it wasn't behaving correctly.
@RangerRick goes well with your profile pic :)
@RangerRick it still makes me shudder, after all these years.
@RangerRick This flash-banged my sanity
@RangerRick
High 👏 contrast 👏 purple👏
@RangerRick I kind of relish this theme.
@Thorium oh no, if you start this game we're really gonna be in a pickle
