@zeitkapsl why Threema and not Signal?
@JeroenBaten Signal is also great, all of us use it daily, but for this post we chose the European option :)

@zeitkapsl @Tutanota @ecosia @threemaapp @nextcloud @homeassistant @pixelunion Ecosia uses Bing, Tutamails is a walled garden

Use Qwant/searxng instance and Disroot

@zeitkapsl @Tutanota @ecosia @threemaapp @nextcloud @homeassistant @pixelunion using Matrix or SimpleX rather than Threema

LibreWolf rather than Firefox

CoMaps rather than OSMAnd

@echedellelr
what is wrong with OsmAnd (or why would you rather recommend CoMaps)?
@simmac Community project taken from Organic Maps which is the legacy after MAPS.ME stopped existing (as FLOSS) and was took by community VS company-based with lot of propietary bits.
@echedellelr ah, good to know, thanks, I'll give it a try!

@echedellelr @Tutanota @ecosia @threemaapp @nextcloud @homeassistant @pixelunion Ecosia uses an independent index, together with Qwant now: https://blog.ecosia.org/launching-our-european-search-index/

Point 8 of the Disroot ToS forbids us to use the service, since we are offering a commercial service. Otherwise it looks like a cool service, might consider it for personal use

The internet just got better: our European search index goes live

We’ve started delivering independent search results from our European-based index. This will help us build the kind of ethical and fair internet we believe in.

The Ecosia Blog
@zeitkapsl @Tutanota @ecosia @threemaapp @nextcloud @homeassistant @pixelunion I was checking Ecosia 3 weeks ago when I read about those news and read the documentation and enable settings for showing link origin. They still use Bing and Google mainly and seems that the european search index they built together is being used mostly for ranking by now
@echedellelr They all use Bing/Google. Hopefully, this will change in the future. They are still planning to build something and need users. What difference does it make whether I use Bing/Google directly or through an intermediary?

@Distante privacy mostly, data security, still low power usage because caching in europe or your own instance

I will check Qwant again but i think they already started to use some of the data already, even if it is mixed and that is why i recommended it

@zeitkapsl Hi Zeitkapsl, I just discovered your service via this post. So far I'm a very satisfied ente.io customer, but your service being european development is a big selling point to me. What other differences are there between your two services?

@gommehammer apart from being a european company with a mostly european supply chain, the main key differences in IMHO:

- full native apps on android and iOS, no flutter/cross platform.
- simpler/minimal UI/UX
- different set of ciphers: https://zeitkapsl.eu/en/e2ee-architecture/
- automatic reverse geo coding (you can search for names of countries/cities without manual tagging)
- instant video streaming (I think ente caught up on that one).

That being said, ente has more "AI" features and is already FOSS.

End-to-End Encrypted sharing in zeitkapsl

An explanation of zeitkapsl's end-to-end encryption architecture with a focus on sharing.

This was a really refreshing post! I seldom see a company compare themselves with a competitor in such an honest, and down to earth, manner.
@zeitkapsl homeassistant is not an EU company
@zeitkapsl 👋
@fdroidorg Hi there 👋 we're big fans! Currently preparing everything for an open source release of our apps which includes getting our Android app ready for distribution on F-Droid, so we'll properly "meet" later this year :)
