I'm probably the last person on Earth to buy YouTube Premium, but I just did. Maybe it'll last, maybe it won't, but right now I just can't take any more betting ads.
@simonbs Second last - I refuse on principle, because it feels like a shakedown every time I look at a video!
@jamesthomson I can totally relate. But the betting ads, man…
@simonbs Yeah, nothing says healthy society like betting adverts.
@jamesthomson @simonbs it took them years but they finally broke me.

@MuseumShuffle @jamesthomson @simonbs

If anything breaks me it's going to be the Paddy Power ads in the UK. The same ads have been following me around on YouTube for about half a decade. Ir feels like I'm the subject of a psychological experiment.

@MuseumShuffle @jamesthomson @simonbs I actually think YouTube Premium is the subscription I get the most value out of.

I watch YouTube a lot - it’s almost replaced TV for me. No ads and the creators I enjoy get more money per view from me? Heck yeah.

@ikenndac @jamesthomson @simonbs 100% agree. I went from “they won’t get me “ to “this is the last subscription I would get rid of“.

@MuseumShuffle @ikenndac @jamesthomson @simonbs Same here!

No ads are definitely a game changer, but I also love background play and offline downloads. They’d have to REALLY jack up the price for me to drop Premium.

@simonbs @jamesthomson Won’t help for ATV, but for everything else… https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wipr-2/id1662217862

@jamesthomson @simonbs 3rd at the least. Same thought here on principle. It’s the only site I maintain very aggressive ad blocking use. Most sites I tone down and some (my fav) I allow since I value them and their ad placement/choices.
@jamesthomson @simonbs I stand with you James, so make that third last! It annoys me so much that being logged into YouTube also means being logged into Google in Safari. So thanks, but no thanks.
@simonbs I hate it but have it too.

@mattiem outta curiosity (as someone who also pays for it), why the hate?

I find myself wishing I could pay for Instagram; the ads waste so much of my attention and time away from content I actually want to see

@peterkos I don’t particularly respect Google. But it’s hard to avoid all organizations that aren’t “good” in our current world.
@peterkos @mattiem Why the hate? Monopoly.
@helge @mattiem i mean... maybe? there are other successful streaming services (Nebula, Floatplane), but video streaming at a large scale is prohibitively expensive to run. the fact there's mainly YouTube I don't believe is due to anything intentional per se
@peterkos @mattiem There is no maybe, it is a monopoly.
@simonbs I subscribed just to watch guitar lesson videos. Oh, and recorded concerts.
@simonbs there’s also https://apps.apple.com/app/id1598997500, functions effectively, albeit with a few constraints

@simonbs one of the best values on the web today. I wish i didn't have to pay for it either, but it's worth it. And we have the family plan so the whole household is ad-free.

@simonbs I went add free years ago, really because I didn’t want my family members bombarded with ads.

It’s so nice though - like the majority of my ‘video’ watching is YouTube these days…

‎Vinegar - Tube Cleaner

‎Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag. It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and keeps videos playing in the background. Note: The "can read information from webpages" text in the permission section is just unfortunate wording. Vinegar…

@romrom Wouldn't work on an Apple TV, though.
@simonbs agreed. Only downside.
@simonbs but it’s not free to host the videos and shouldn’t the content creators get paid for the value they are providing to us?
@simonbs honestly it’s the best subscription there is for video services. I’d cancel everything else before premium. Although, the algorithm is utterly cooked at the moment. I watched one video on Irish history and it’s now my entire feed. Same happens when I listen to a single synthwave random video too
@simonbs I still don’t have it either
@simonbs pro tip: after 3 years of subscribing I realized that YouTube music is included and started using it on my HomePods. This gives you the ability to use your other music subscription in simultaneously (useful for families...)
