Starting a thread where I list entertainment stuff that has fatphobia in it.

Entertainment stuff = tv shows, movies, books, etc. (as opposed to news articles)

Fatphobia = fat jokes, weight comments, fat suits, etc.

I’m doing this because it seems to be in almost everything I see lately.

So yeah, here we go ⬇️

Just quickly before I begin: it does not necessarily mean that I think the show, movie, whatever is bad per se. It’s literally just keeping tabs of fatphobia in the entertainment I consume.

Also, when there are quotes involved, I’m usually paraphrasing, because I have a bad memory and just can’t remember everything exactly as it was said.

Motel California (2025) #TVshow #kdrama

First minute of the first episode had a character in a fat suit.

I didn’t bother to watch the rest of the show (a fat suit is usually an immediate no for me), so I don’t know if the rest of the show had more fatphobia in it.

Wow, I completely forgot that. The ML was portrayed as fat as a teen. Since the love story started then, and resumes in adulthood, I didn't perceive the story as fat phobia. However, I can see it being perceived that way. I quite loved the series, especially the multicoloured visuals that were consistent in the hotel and in her design studio. Not everyone did.

@EllenInEdmonton I truly hate fat suits, but I know not everybody minds.

A fat suit usually means the character was once fat (and therefore ugly, sad, lonely, etc.) and is now thin (and therefore hot, happy, popular, etc.) and I hate that trope.

I despise fat suits, so however cute or fun the rest of the story is, I cannot take it seriously anymore.

Same reason why I was thoroughly disappointed in John Wick 4 😔

@dikgelukkig
Yes, I understand that. IMHO, the series could have focussed on other ways that the ML was initially awkward, versus adding the fat suit. They also could have cast a large actor, but I suspect there are few in the K-drama world of visual perfection.
