@mattblaze And to think that some people aspire to having a "high follower count" 😃 At one of the Battlebot's my team competed in I ended up in a conversation with Carmen Electra at a food table, I don't even remember what I said, but after that she said, "Thanks, you're one of the few people here who hasn't tried to tell me what I was doing wrong." Which kind of stunned me, but I could see where she was coming from.

@mattblaze Masto is rather thick with ideological purists. They'd rather you spend all your time trying to keep outdated hardware running instead of actually doing something worthwhile (it's ok for them to update their own, though, because reasons).

Who needs security and up to date applications? Not like privacy matters ...

@bluetea @mattblaze and they also often want you to prioritise getting other people to change their tech habits. I am actively doing work to improve how groups I’m involved in treat marginalised people, getting them to stop using WhatsApp to coordinate volunteers so I can use less meta products is simply not a good use of my social capital right now

I don't get people chastising you over a specific device. I try to suggest privacy friendly and socially responsible tools when possible, but there's levels to it. I have asked people who I'm advising to really think and list their needs, or to keep a record for a week or two of what they use on their phone - and what their goals are. And you know what? I've actually told some people to switch to Apple (or buy an iPad if their use case suited it) because what they're jumping through hoops for on Android is built into Apple, and vice-versa. Do the things you need to do with the safest and most responsible devices you can afford.
