I've been actively trying to make myself be bored lately. The urge to pickup the phone, even when I have seconds of empty time is high. I have to suppress it very consiously. I have become addicted and gertting out of it is hard work.

I was in denial for a long time. I convinced myself that it is normal and beneficial to utilise my time better. But companies pray on that behaviour and lock you in to their platforms using your urge not to be bored.

Pay attention.

You Need to Be Bored. Here's Why.

@lehtimaeki Not sure about locking in on the 'boredom' part of it. I think it sounds a lot like what meditation is about... clearing your mind, allowing yourself to be in the present, etc.

@lehtimaeki I also realized this about myself a few months ago. I set up focus time and do not disturb to block out all notifications and apps except messages from family, slack during work hours, and calls that passed the spam filter.

Anything else was delegated to two 15 minute blocks of time on my calendar where it would automatically unlock.

in the meantime, I wrote down phone things I wanted to do on a wallet sized index card, so I was free to let the thoughts go.

It was wonderful.
