Announcing Clive, a new font inspired by Clive Sinclair's ZX81.

#Font #ZX81 #semigraphics

Clive is the second font that is built using entirely my own tools (the other is Dorothy Norma). At least, second released font; i have a few more unreleased. The pipelines are mixes of Python, text files, SVG, and Go tools. No font-editors like Glyphs or Fontra. Even the final TTF binaries are compiled using my own Go programs.

Dorothy Norma: https://drj11.itch.io/norma-font

Norma is likely to lose this status soon by moving to `fontmake` (like Fifteenel).

A few people have said kind words about my new font Clive, and kind words are always appreciated. But for this release i would say that they are particularly appreciated, because while i was preparing the release of Clive i had a massive crisis of confidence (more so than usual :) ) and imagined that there was no way this font was any good: it was just a pile of ZX81 graphics that wasn't entertaining or interesting in any way. So thank you for your kind words and support.
@drj If you slap on a #retrogaming and #retrocomputing hashtag this dope little font will pop up in the feed of even more people who'd appreciate it!
@pixelambacht yes, good idea. My hashtag game is not very strong.
@drj this font is great and original! The idea of the two tone in a pixel font is super, I had never thought of that

@liaizon for the keen, i have a few more (draft) notes here https://gitlab.com/drj11/font-clive/-/blob/main/portfolio.md?ref_type=heads

The two-tone is one of those things, it just seemed natural when i had the idea, and then maybe so natural others would have thought of it. I'm actually surprised the effect was never used on the ZX81 itself on a title screen or something (at least, i haven't seen such).

@drj randomly reaching out to say the work is super inspring and interesting - as others have said, the two-tone is super nice.
On a higher level, I find it wonderful to see the results of someone's passion and energy.
@drj Nice! The horizontally stretched pixels don’t really communicate ZX81 to me TBH. It seems to belong more to the 8 bit Commodore and Atari systems with their various graphic modes.

@paulvanderlaan to pointlessly over-emphasize this point, the semigraphics used to make the Clive font are now produced directly from the ZX81 ROM :) https://gitlab.com/drj11/font-semi81 . There is no change in the actual Clive font, so i haven't re-released it. I feel like bytes have souls, so the soul of the ZX81 ROM will make it into Clive in its next release.

@paulvanderlaan @drj Wait, where do you see those?Z
@pixelambacht @drj Stretched pixels: Spy vs Spy on the C64.
@paulvanderlaan yes, i am familiar with those. I think what @pixelambacht was asking is, where do you see stretched pixels in Clive? I can't speak for them, but i assume you meant the 4x8 half-blocks (which currently are 4x8 exactly square pixels, but that may change in the next release based on some stunning research on microcomputer pixel clocks).
@drj @paulvanderlaan Yeah, I was asking about the font. Stretched C64 multicolor pixels are familiar territory :-)
@drj I posted it on the typography community here https://piefed.social/post/1248945
