@Tutanota please check your alt texts before posting, it shouldn't have full caps nor useless newlines
@zy @Tutanota FFS can we please not have the HOA policing the exact formatting of someone's alt text???
@dalias @zy @Tutanota could be important for screen readers.
@dalias whos FFS and whos HOA
@Tutanota

@zy @Tutanota FFS = for fuck's sake.

HOA = homeowners association, a nickname for the folks on fedi who act like they have a duty to police how others post and interact.

It would have been fine to ask nicely and state reasons for requesting changes to alt text. But treating someone like they've committed some offense by not formatting the alt text exactly as you think it should be formatted, when they actually made an effort by including alt text in the first place, is really unwelcoming and hostile.

@dalias
didn't mean any offense or anything, just not gonna write 500 characters each time someone uses a thing that detects the text of an image and use that without checking the result. (also "please" should be the word that say it's not meant to be unwelcoming and hostile, it's tiring having to find the perfect way to say anything because else people will give your message a meaning it doesn't have)
@Tutanota had a good feeling about the Tuta crew from the beginning. No regrets now.

@Tutanota @EUCommission Understand this: people do not want this and will do whatever it takes to stop it. Here's an example - Tuta is making it clear. And I'm telling you myself: if force has to be used - so be it. Privacy is not something we will give up without a fight.

@Tutanota i dont get that chat control. how does this work with open source messengers, like dunno, where encryption is client side and the server acts as a broker. how in snowdens name can you add a backdoor in there?

especially if you only act as broker with like a protocol that any app could implement.

like, if i encrypt my mail, is a 3 letter agency taking me to blacksite?!

@utf_7 @Tutanota I try to explain that it works something like this:

I use (say) GPG (PGP whatever).
Then I use (say) GMail, (I don't). WHat the government going to do? Fucking Nothing is the answer.

Back Doors like this are used against Massive providers (FaceBook, Gmail, etc) because it casts the Biggest Net and gains the Most communications of/by The Masses. *This Is The Goal*. Minimal Work, Maximum Effect.

These governments aren't in this for security.

No, they do Not care.

@elfin @utf_7 @Tutanota What the government is going to do is outlaw encryption that has no government backdoor, because that is obviously attempting to circumvent the measures that keep everyone safe. Which means you’re up to no good, because otherwise you’d not be attempting to circumvent the measures that keep everyone safe. So sending GPG’d messages would land you a fine at the very least.
@ArtHarg @elfin @Tutanota lol, guess who would write a bot that sends random encrypted stuff around the country

@utf_7 @ArtHarg @Tutanota In fact, my friend and I used to trade recipes in PGP long ago JUST to piss off the Feds during US vs Zimmerman

Your bot doesn't even need to actually engrypt anything; just send lie a recipe, or boble verse, or War and Peace one paragraph at a time in ROT13 and someone will freak out.

@elfin @ArtHarg @Tutanota i asked AI (no, i actually didnt) but it recommended rot26. like aes256 is better than aes128. doubling the number results in better encryption. change my mind.
@utf_7 @elfin @Tutanota New standard: ROT265. ROT26, applied five times consecutively for extra security.
@utf_7 @ArtHarg @Tutanota I ased My AI (I didn't) and my AI CONCURS! We should Totally Rock That(we shouldn't)!

@utf_7

@Tutanota

From my understanding the first point is that it is not allowed then to use those messengers if they do not add clientside scanning.
In addition appstores might need to block those apps in the EU (for sideloading and free appstores: You might then brake the law because those messengers are not allowed anymore). Just my non-legalese understanding of this situation

@Tutanota People who want to mandate backdoors either don't understand or don't care that any backdoor they can mandate, a nation-state threat actor can and probably will find and exploit.
@zakalwe @Tutanota or, option 3: they understand, and care, and explicitly want backdoor access to their citizen's data for purposes they will never mention publicly until forced to do so by journalism and the law.
@TheRealPomax @zakalwe Never thought of it that way, that's demoralizing.
@Tutanota @zakalwe it's literally why the UK demanded it. We don't live in a very nice world at the moment, lots of fights to be had to rein all this back in and lots of political parties that need to be joined by level headed folks so they can be taken over by people who actually care about more than just their clique of friends =(
@Tutanota und wohin wenn es nicht klappt?
@itaint Noch kämpfen wir! Alles weitere sehen wir, wenn es so weit ist.
@Tutanota amazing approach, I count on you Tuta!
@Tutanota good luck!
(If that passes I'm going full openPGP)
@Tutanota good job Tuta. I love you all.
@Tutanota It's as if, every day, the police come to your house and search through your personal belongings, looking for something suspicious. And all this without a search warrant. It's completely crazy.
@Tutanota a recent take by @Em0nM4stodon suggests that might be some AI companies lobbying this shit. It's sweet-sweet government contracts they are after. I never look at this from such perspective, but once I did, it certainly makes sense. I find this atrocious and infuriating. It is just a living example of how these technologies transform the world into a modern day gulag
@Tutanota Respect to Tuta for standing firm. Privacy isn't a luxury it's a right. Thanks for choosing to fight for encryption and not compromise user trust. The internet needs more like you.
@Tutanota sometimes I feel like the EU is becoming a Soviet Union 2.0
@Tutanota #thanks if you need to leave the #eu let me know

@Tutanota I have been 3 days deleting all my Meta and Google apps. It's huge!!

Trying out new options for everything
