retoot this if your retirement plan is essentially based on the idea that civilisation will probably crumble before you reach 65 and money will be meaningless anyway.
@cmconseils I've always been an extremely frugal person and saved as much as possible, I'm on track to have the ability to retire relatively close to the age of 40
@Roofastronaut for heaven's sake, read the damn room
*plonk*
@Roofastronaut @cmconseils what number you shooting for, if you don’t mind saying? I’m thinking $1.25M for a 60’s retirement in the Midwest for me. That’s should be about $50k a year until my mid to late 80’s. That should be well beyond what this body will need cared for. With the uncertainty of two more decades I wouldn’t even know what to plan for.
@passwordsarehard4 @cmconseils I don't have a number in mind, I just enjoy saving and investing my money long term, currently I'm on track to have 1.1 million at 40 if I continue saving and investing the same amount
@passwordsarehard4 @Roofastronaut @cmconseils Have you accounted for future inflation?
@rojun @passwordsarehard4 @cmconseils depending on the cause, inflation should affect equities 🤷‍♀️ I don't actually intend to retire early since I enjoy working, I just take comfort in knowing I'll have the ability to if I want/need to
@Roofastronaut @passwordsarehard4 @cmconseils Depends, if it's equities on a holding company holding its assets as cash on a bank account, then it's probably losing relative value. I thought that it was implied that the lump sum was personal cash.
@rojun @passwordsarehard4 @cmconseils nah. I have it invested in various ETFs. I'm assuming an average annual 8% rate of return.

@Roofastronaut @cmconseils is love to know how money this is.

Unless the respondent believes the will soon end and their savings only need to last 3-4 years.

@cmconseils

Lol god knows theyre not going to let me keep my 401k and theyre not even pretending social security is for the nonbillionaires anymore

@cmconseils @jcrabapple We were just in Brittany, the most climate stable part of France when it comes to global warming - looking for which part we want to move to in the next few years and to be as self-sustainable as possible.

... But it feels like the collapse might come too soon

@cmconseils

Have you planted microphones in my house? This is scary.

@cmconseils
Retirement plan = total organ collapse. Either way…not going to be comfy.
@umrk @cmconseils that depends on how you want to make your organs collapse 😅
@cmconseils I was hoping for the Robopocalypse but having to deal with LLM's in my job I'm not holding my breath for that one anymore. So my retirement plan is Nuclear Winter. Here's hoping someone decides to push the button soon.
I'm 57 and hell yes. Already too old for Madmaxing

@angel @cmconseils

Yeah, my Ben Franklin style "bald on top" with fringe doesn't lend itself to mohawk.

@cmconseils
Retirement?
😂
I'm 66 & my life as a F&B/Retail worker means no such thing awaits me

@cmconseils I more or less bet on that in my teens. World lasted longer than I expected :(
@crazyeddie @cmconseils yes, in my younger days I didn’t think we’d make it this far. it’s been a very slow-moving apocalypse. But it does feel liie it’s been picking up speed a bit lately.

@maccruiskeen @cmconseils That's because some of the others my age have decided to hit FF.

We were all told there was going to be a great afterparty and we've been waiting a long time.

Everyone had seemed to make up their mind, you know? All the adults saying, "We're all too stupid and we're going to blow you up and fill the world with trash."

Some people were waiting for floating cities and flying cars. We've been waiting for the end of days. So many broken promises.

@maccruiskeen @cmconseils Reading this again after notice someone liked it or whatever...

This actually really hits home. I'd learn about all the stuff that was going wrong that people were doing to fuck up the world. Then I'd see that nobody wanted to stop. They'd fight anyone who tried. Even those who'd talk non-stop about it.

And even if that weren't the case, if I could win, God was blowing it all up anyway. This matched my experience with fathers--not just my own. "Meth? Fuck it.."

@cmconseils

"I would have liked to have retired someday."

is what I said last year...

"I would have liked to have lived longer."

is what I said, quietly.

(typo clean up. and addition. hard to type when upset)

@cmconseils -it’s already there on both counts.
@cmconseils ...all my life, I've been ahead of the curve-- in the worst ways. I'm 71, only 8 work credits so no Social Security or Medicare coverage, fighting cancer... <sigh>
@vinomadic @cmconseils oh shit, my prime "career" years have been decimated by autistic burnout, how do I figure out how many "work credits" I have??

@vinomadic @cmconseils thank you! I am scared to look at this.
@cmconseils i'm 29, living in the EU, and my retirement plan is to move to a country where euthanasia is legal
@largo @cmconseils see, this here is part of retirement nobody talks about out. When quality of life is shit enough and there are no more good days, only despicable, inhumane choices. I want to tap out.
@largo @cmconseils My retirement plan is ringing the doorbell of a wrong house in Texas.

@cmconseils

My forward plan [nice bit of management speak there - all plans are forward I suppose] is, by the time the shit has completely hit the fan and there's no pretending for the planet's possible salvation any more (2040), I'll have reached my currently expected end date.

@cmconseils

My retirement plan is to go to countries where the cost of living is much lower and just wander the earth on a tourist visa, crossing borders every 3 months.

@cmconseils that and planting some poppy seeds for my overdose when everything becomes unbearable...
@A_No_nee_Moose @cmconseils ooh, talking to the angels on grapefruit juice poppy "tea," now there's something I haven't done in a while
@A_No_nee_Moose @cmconseils would you how/where can i get some seeds? Asking for a friend.
@skoombidoombis @cmconseils the poppy seeds you use for baking are the right ones. That's P. somniferum. The seeds don't contain a lot of alcaloids. Only the plant and especially the sap. So after flowering, the still green seed capsule needs to be scratched, and the resin is raw opium.
@cmconseils Had to cash out everything 20 years ago, to get medical care, long before retirement age. Already there, just living a very simple life.

@cmconseils

I've already started taking "flaming guitar while balancing on a tanker truck" lessons...

@cmconseils
I was supposed to die three years ago, so I don't know wth is going to happen now.
@cmconseils g wife seems to think that after this happens we will still need to pay our mortgage
@cmconseils As a diabetic with total renal failure, if civilization collapses, I die with it. So it doesn't really matter, I guess.
@cmconseils
I'll be 65 next February, so not much point in my retoot.
@cmconseils learn to basically be freegan through dumpster diving and developed a keeper sense of when something goes bad for this very reason

@cmconseils mine was. I'm now 69... but it was a good bet when I made it, back in 1972, and it's a good bet now.

ANY pension plan is a bet that #capitalism will outlive you. Even if you believe it would be a good thing if it did, do you seriously believe it can?

Furthermore, we should encourage people not to invest in pensions not merely because it's a bad bet, but because people who are invested in the system are motivated to keep on propping it up, even as it destroys the world we live on.

@cmconseils I'm not quite there yet, but the thought has crossed my mind. P.S. I'm 64.
@cmconseils personally my retirement plan is "money becomes meaningless" but in an entirely different and more hopeful direction
@cmconseils

I've been saving since 25+ years, but I sorta think it's not gonna matter.
@cmconseils I'm hedging by putting money into a roth IRA just in case but mostly yeah, I'd be absolutely shocked if the banks survive long enough for me to be able to collect on it
@cmconseils As an Environmentalist, I have to save the tigers. Because my most realistic retirement plan is getting eaten by one.
@cmconseils mine is "I have a contract that allows me to continue working part-time at 65."
@cmconseils I’ve invested in a good axe since everything Hollywood has taught me about post-apocalyptic living is that a good axe is essential.
@cmconseils our retirement plan is we're unlikely to make it to retirement age
