Silverberry (ölweide - eleagnus) harvest - two of the three different edible sorts carried this year despite starting the year as baby plants. Next year should be better with ‘established’ plants.

Their berry taste is quite different (a bit sour but good so), and have a massive seed, which you can eat, but I wouldn’t want to process into a jam. So, experimenting with a juice/syrup thing.

Well - the colour stays in the skin! As does much of the taste. I suspect for a decent juice it would need to be cold pressed. With a bit of sugar, it’s made one jug of sweet water for today’s consumption.

The plants are hardy, have pretty, silver leaves and with its olive-silver berries remaining a pop of red for a good 2 months as they ripen, I’ll be keeping them. The insects like it. But it’ll be tested in the windy desert corner of the balcony next year (nothing grows well there!)
