Over/Under #32 with Kevin Gimbel

@hyde @KevinGimbel

I remember the RaspberriPi fiasco on fedi. Their response was... bewildering and sad.

Do you remember for sure if the cop was involved with mass/public surveillance? Their copy never specified. I kinda assumed that he focused on surveilling individuals as a part of criminal investigations, while many others jumped to the conclusion that he was involved with mass/public surveillance.

Of course, RPi's response didn't help thing in the least.

P.S. Are dSLRs (non-mirrorless cameras) dead? I haven't been watching the digital camera space, and honestly haven't opened up my camera bag in years.
I'd be sad if the world were mirrorless, though. They certainly have advantages, but I adore an optical viewfinder.

@rl_dane @hyde @KevinGimbel there are still DSLRs being made in the professional range, but from what I know mirrorless' are taking over the market. And you can get mirrorless cameras with optical viewfinders, they work just like the rangefinder cameras of yore.
@rl_dane @hyde @KevinGimbel And as for the RPis, they have their niche where they win by their form factor, adhering to standards, ease of flashing, and being able to run from PoE. So I'd say Pis are great if you need one of the above, but if you just need a server for general computing, get an used USFF computer, you will pay half the price and get 5 times the computing power.

@stfn @hyde @KevinGimbel

I think the Raspi Zero is pretty innovative in terms of computing power per watt draw, but then I remember that they still don't have any kind of S3 suspend on any of their devices, and I wonder why the heck not. XD

* runs for the hills, screaming

There's literally two kinds of rangefinders: the kind you find on super cheap, super endearing plasticky Yashicas, and the kind you find on pretentious $6,000 Leicas.
Which is not to say that one is really all that better than the other. XD

Edit: diction

@rl_dane @stfn @KevinGimbel my XPro 2 and 3 have optical viewfinders. They're great cameras.

About the hire, my sentence was more like "specialized in surveillance in general" not really mass surveillance.

@hyde @stfn @KevinGimbel

Your wording was "population surveillance," so I read that as "mass surveillance."

@rl_dane @hyde I was honestly not aware of the RPi drama at all. But I like that there’s alternatives, and I’m always happy to try different things :D

There are still DSLRs, but I think it’s more of a high end thing? I’ve stopped using DSLRs as my main cameras a decade ago. I like to shoot analog DSLRs and I like the older models like Canon EOS 5D Mk3 or Mk4.

@KevinGimbel @rl_dane I used to have the canon 5d mk3 but I sold it with all the lenses and went for Fuji XPro-1 and The x100.
@hyde @rl_dane two beautiful cameras! I really love my X-Pro1 for everyday and travel.

@KevinGimbel I regret I sold the XPro-1 though πŸ˜”

I'm not dead set against digital viewfinders if they're done well. They'd have to be pretty high resolution to be equivalent, and have the optics set up such that it feels like you're looking at a large projection far away.

I just wouldn't want to chiefly use a rangefinder (accuracy issues) or a screen (eye strain issues).

Then again, I don't think I've actually peered into a digital viewfinder made in the last decade and a half, so they might all be that good already and I'm kvetching over nothing, as I am wont to do. πŸ˜„
