They work exactly like guppe: anyone can create a group by simply mentioning its handle in a post or typing it into the search bar– just put "ovo.st" instead of "a.gup.pe". I'll link more info in the replies!

gup.pe groups are no more. FediGroups aren't a viable option for sharing explicit fanworks – they don't allow "adult NSFW content".

Okay, some really bad news but also a suggestion for a way forward. The Guppe groups domain name was sold by their registrar before they could renew it. This means all Guppe groups are broken, and their web addresses point to a spam blog 😞 However, there is another group provider called FediGroups, you can find out more on their site: ➑️ https://about.fedigroups.social/home FediGroups has features that Guppe never had, including private groups. The guppe mess itself doesn't seem to have been related to puritanism (apparently the domain was sold before the owner had a chance to renew it: https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/115167305897549859), but the way the FediGroups rules are phrased sure is....something πŸ˜’

@forestsystem I do follow a few of those! 😊 They're not the same as group bots of course, but they do at least somewhat solve the hashtag federation problem (i.e. if you follow/search for a hashtag, you still only see posts from servers your own server is 'aware' of).

That's one reason I found guppe groups so useful – they were like fediverse-wide hashtags visible to anyone who followed them, regardless of federation.

Plus, they were automated and super easy to set up, with zero technical knowledge required, so anyone could create one literally within seconds.
