I’m feeling an urgent need to make an escape-from-the-UK plan in the increasingly likely event that the far right gains power in the next few years. The most upsetting thing is that the same people stripped me of my rights to do so with #Brexit. Now the only people that can easily emigrate are the very wealthy.

This is why I will never ever stop being furious about Brexit. I never lose sight of what I personally lost on that day.

@flup well, if you can find a Job in Germany, it's more of a formality to have your residency permit rubberstamped.

Whildt the #UK isn't in the #EU anymore, you still have quite some #PassportPrivilegue...

@kkarhan @AuswaertigesAmt that’s really good to know. I’ve been slowly learning German for the past 18 months with exactly this in mind but it’s really hard going, I’m not a natural with languages. Thank you for your thoughtful reply, I really do appreciate it.
@flup @kkarhan @AuswaertigesAmt not sure if Germany won’t loose that race, too (until brexit my go to country would have been the UK). We better keep fighting.

@flup Still hoping my entire country finds a way out of the "United" Kingdom.

If you think you're pissed off about brexit, imagine a big part of your country's choosing not to become independent was the promise of remaining in the EU. And, you know, having your national opinions generally listened to and such (Scotland voted Remain).

@fluffgar I don’t have to imagine, I’ve lived in Scotland for the last ten years. With independence being an apparent impossibility , and the threat that a Farage government could just sweep away Holyrood and the devolution settlement (a surprisingly popular move in England), the threat seems all the more immediate.

I’m a soft supporter for independence, but am bitterly disappointed by the inability of the SNP to move the polling needle an inch in all this time.

@flup @fluffgar I'm not surprised watching from the Welsh end. Actually doing something requires an additional level of "what the fuck" to happen as it did in the Thatcher era - where the biggest boost to Welsh nationalism wasn't Plaid Cymru but John Redwood.

The bright spot is that if the English get Farage and it triggers an English revolution then Wales, Scotland etc are defacto independent - and it's probably the only way the Welsh would get around to it 8)

@etchedpixels @flup @fluffgar haha English revolution🤔 Dream on.

@flup we were victims of a theft, and the thieves are all around us, whining about Refugees in Hotels and other meaningless shit.

It's a shame this government values thieves over citizens

@flup Farage coming to power in Westminster would have the largest possible effect on the people who are currently 'don't knows' on the issue of Scottish independence.

Farage is an English nationalist: he would be delighted to see Scotland go, not least because it would improve his chances at Westminster elections.

Lots of reasonable people in England would emigrate to Scotland in order to escape Farage.

All in all, I think that Farage offers the quickest route to Scottish independence.

@djm_black A Farage-led government would never allow a referendum. They would sweep away Holyrood and the devolution settlement first—a move surprisingly popular in England.

I feel the hope in what you say but I just don’t think that’s what would happen. And even if it did, I couldn’t wish for it because of the damage it would do to our closest neighbour.

@flup For the record: I don't think that Farage will come to power at Westminster, but time will tell...
@djm_black I really hope you’re right, but the slide in his direction is absolutely terrifying.
@flup A lot of countries unlike the UK don't care if you keep visiting for 3 months a year or so which means you can move between a lot of places on a UK passport - 6 months in Albania I think, then 3 in Germany then 3 somewhere else etc.
There are also some very good visa options in places like Japan at this point as they fight depopulation, and my guess is we'll see a lot more countries switching from "fuck off" to "please come here" over the next decade.

@flup @cstross

And many previously decent destinations are now or are threatening to be just as bad. (Looks over shoulder at the Trump regime...)

@danmcd @cstross pfff USA is blacklisted indefinitely as far as I’m concerned

@flup @cstross

And who can blame you? I sure can't.

@flup @cstross

I swear we (in the US) are living the backstory of Allen Steele's "Coyote" books.

@danmcd @cstross I don’t get this reference but I’m assuming it’s apt ❤️

@flup @cstross

Very. The novella-turned-Coyote-first-section "Stealing Alabama" was written not long before the beginning of Bush-the-younger's presidency. It imagined a RWNJ "United Republic of America" (one star in the flag), with breakaway nations "Pacifica" (US West coast), and "The Commonwealth of New England".

The URA poured money into a longshot interstellar sleeper craft, which actually worked, but not before its crew declared independence from the URA. A LOT more ensues.

Common Travel Area: rights of UK and Irish citizens

GOV.UK
@mike @flup Yes, relocate to Republic of Ireland. IIIRC, 7 years residence required for full citizenship.

@flup

With regards to an escape plan as I understand it UK citizens still enjoy freedom of movement with Ireland?

@flup
Brexit represents the biggest failure of our governmental institutions in my lifetime. Tory complacency and wrongdoing have all but destroyed this country and taken us back to the 70s, just after we were beginning to shrug off some our post-empire arrogance.

Intra-party warfare led a spineless PM to agree to a Referendum on a future that was portrayed as all things to all men. Leave was allowed to march home on a minuscule snapshot majority and an undefined prospectus. All of it steeped in electoral illegality, foreign interference and dark money; driven forward by political pygmies who cared more for their careers than the country.
