Accidental Tech Podcast: 655: Shorts-Compatible Body Type

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@marcoarment I've considered getting the Ultra Milanese loop, but I worried that the two finishes wouldn't look good together (I have the "natural" titanium S10). Is that not an issue for you? What finishes do you have?
@sharding Natural/natural. It's not a true match since the watch is polished and the band is matte, but in practice, I usually don't care.
@atpfm regarding Kate not wanting the “3-camera” phone, perhaps it’s not specifically her reason, but there is the phenomenon of younger people rejecting the pro phones for being associated with the uncool, standard issue, corporate stooge, dad, sellout types etc. The pro-phones are the dad-phones (eww). Hi guys. I clicked on the St Jude link in the chapters screen, and got this ugliness. I hope it gets fixed and you get the extra fragile donations.

@atpfm Regarding the compact Safari UI, to get to all tabs you can just two-finger pinch on the current page to display all rather than the swipe up thing that @marcoarment and @caseyliss described.

@atpfm Regarding swollen batteries i Apple laptops; I think it is way more common than Siracusa suggests, or at least if used for more than a couple of years.

Most of my Mac laptops have ended up with swollen batteries, same for others around me. Like my moms and my sisters MacBook Airs. I had to order third party batteries and replace them. Getting the glued batteries out of my MacBook Pro took hours!

@atpfm The titanium Milanese loop is amazing, can confirm it doesn't pinch arm hairs, but it has one massive downside. Anytime I put my hands around my head to lean back in frustration (which given the abject state of the world is more and more often) it manages to grab a clump of my head hair & pull it out. Much more painful than the arm hair.

@atpfm I tried to use my phone with the Apple silicon case and without case at the beach and it does not make a difference. It simply does not work and definitely is not up to spec (in a proper engineering way. I am sure in a legalese/marketing way it must be compliant. That makes me mad)

@atpfm another reason for having a case for an AirPods case…as a reason to differentiate them when everyone else in the family also has AirPods…and being in a family where we leave them laying around the house 😁

@atpfm @marcoarment Razer laptops are notorious for bloated batteries. 2 years ago they added a max charging limit, which has worked for mine (knock on wood).

Also their Synapse software frequently breaks them. Personally I would never buy one again, there are plenty of companies out there with a better reputation.

@atpfm @siracusa John, I still own a 14 Pro Max. I’m surprised to hear you say that the 80% charge option was not available on your old 14 Pro. 🤔 Or was it only on the Pro Max? If you remember your French classes, here is a print screen of my battery settings. 😉🔋 Unless I am mistaken, I’ve seen it active in iOS for many years.
@nicdou Maybe iOS added support after I’d already switched phones.
@siracusa @nicdou it does not say the same thing in English. The general themes are the same, but it's much different. (including the classic: it is "the iPhone" in French)
@siracusa @nicdou ah, it's Québécois! The first phrase is "to reduce the aging of the battery", and then it said "habitudes quotidiennes" which I also found a little odd. Not that it is wrong, and I could read it, but it is much different than what I am used to.
@siracusa @nicdou here’s mine in Fr (here, they say "your iPhone")
@sayrer @siracusa “I could read it.” Surprising, and honestly a bit rude. Respectfully: Québécois isn’t its own language. We speak French. Just as Mexicans don’t speak “Mexican” and Australians don’t speak “Australian.” Americans, Brits, and Aussies all speak English differently, yet share one written language. The same goes for French: diverse voices, accents, and idioms. One shared language.
@nicdou @siracusa Oh, I didn't mean to be offensive at all. I am accepting of all languages. (I work on localization sometimes). I'll use Spanish, since it is not personal here: Rioplatense Spanish is different from Mexican which is again different from Spain Spanish, and not necessarily mutually intelligible. That's why we have different langauge codes, like es-AR. When I worked at Twitter, the British folks added an en-GB localization, because it is not the same written language.

@nicdou @siracusa the reason I said "I could read it" is because I have lived in a few French-speaking countries. Not Canada, but France and some others. It is a second language for me.

In English, I don't have to actively think about the meaning in New Orleans, Boston, Vancouver, or Toronto, even if it's a bit different. But I do have to work in London. Montreal is the same for me, only harder, because it is a second language.

@atpfm Demanding 10% of Intel is not a Socialist move. It is a National Socialist move.
@atpfm Regarding Razer: Gamers Nexus recently did a report on their issues with their laptops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhfqhCxqpQ8. They have widespread issues with both software and the hardware in the newest generation. Running their Synapse software causes massive FPS drops in games but if you turn the software off, the laptop power use drops significantly, which is definitely not good for gaming use. Trackpads broken out of the box and breaking within days of use. Not a good brand.

@atpfm regarding the name for the new phone, my guesses apart from the iPhone Air:

iPhone 17s
(You know is slim, the know, but nobody woll confirm it)

The New iPhone
(Bizzare, but they did it with the iPad and we know them)

@atpfm
Razer is far from a good gaming laptop maker. You’re probably lucky or for good reason, have tempered expectations because Razer laptops, especially the new ones are not really built to last. Asus makes great ones in their rog and zephyrus lines, and gigabyte has some new models that are pretty decent.

@atpfm I lost my Remarkable 2 tablet and I’m loathed to buy another one, especially since I have an M4 iPad Pro and pencil. I’m shocked there are no iPad apps that mimic the notebook-replacing simplicity and efficiency of the Remarkable software.

Would love it if you took at stab at it, @marcoarment. 🙂
