A Candle Not Fireworks

“Arisu, that was Yuu on the phone. She’s bringing Touko to visit me and #view the local fireworks. She wants us to join them. They would like to get to know you better,” Saeki shouted from the kitchen, a “privilege” she had wrestled from her service-oriented girlfriend.

“I have to finish this costume and study. Plus, you wanted me to ace that stupid math test.” Arisu’s excuses might have run on, but Saeki cut her off. She knew this game. It was called, “Get Arisu to do something for herself, not ‘Mistress.’”

“That girl is quite a handful,” she muttered to herself.

Louder, she said, “You work too hard. They’re coming all the way out here to see me, and it would be nice if you joined us. Yuu likes you, and if you don’t pick a fight with Touko, it will be fun.” Saeki had to admit she wasn’t very good at this game. Like now, she had already switched to coaxing.

Saeki had to smile to herself. She’d never imagined the day would come when she would be coaxing a girlfriend to do something fun. Her high school friends would laugh at seeing serious Sayaka-san pushing to do something as frivolous as fireworks viewing. She wasn’t the same girl who had first met Arisu; even her language had “deteriorated.” She amended the thought to “become less formal.”

Arisu poked her head into the kitchen, paper #crane in hand and a smart-alecky smile tugging at her lips. “Will you wear the yukata I made you?”

Arisu was better at this game, Saeki had to admit. But she still had one card left.

“Only if you wear yours. No street fashion, no Lolita, and NO Goth.”

“Deal, senpai!” Arisu’s grin lit up the kitchen.

Saeki rolled her eyes at her girlfriend using “senpai” but let it go; it was better than “Mistress,” the title Arisu favored.

Confession of a Yandere

Amber Teahouse

The next day, the four women met at the Amber Teahouse to plan their day. Their geta-clad feet ached, and with the sun beating down, they were glad to duck inside.

The shop was busier than usual, full of people enjoying the festival before the fireworks, but Inukai-san, the proprietor, still had time to greet them at the door. “Arisu-san, Sayaka-san, welcome. You brought your friends Nanami-san and Koito-san. I’m glad to see you; it’s been a while.”

The women greeted Inukai-san, who bowed and resumed talking. “It’s busier than usual, so I can only stop for a moment. But I have a new tea blend from Kenya that you might enjoy. Arisu-san has had it and liked it. And Sarasa made orange scones that are a perfect match.”

“Kenyan will be fine,” Saeki said, and Yuu and Arisu nodded. “And the scones,” Yuu #added.

When the other three had ordered, it was Touko’s turn. “I’ll #pass on the tea but I’d love some coffee, if you please, with cream, and whatever pastry will go well with it. I remember everything Sarasa-san makes is excellent.”

“She will be so pleased to hear you said that,” Inukai-san said. The lilt in her voice showed the compliment pleased her as much as if it had been for her. “I’ll #pass your kind words on to her, but pease tell her that when she brings your order—ah, the corner table just opened up; I’ll go clean it, and you can have a seat.”

Inukai-san was as efficient as usual, and she cleared the table almost instantly. Then, with a bright smile, she was off to take another customer’s order.

Soon, only Arisu remained standing, oblivious to the other patrons sipping tea and laughing. Their chatter washed over her, unheard.

“Is something wrong?” Yuu asked Saeki.

“I don’t know. Arisu, are you okay?”

Arisu blinked and sat down, mumbling what sounded like an excuse.

Confession of a Yandere

“You’re pale as a ghost; what’s wrong?” Saeki asked. The others looked on with sympathy but respectfully remained silent.

“That table… next to the counter. Do you see the girls?” Arisu asked.

“The tanned, athletic-looking girl sitting across from the one with a #rumpled blouse and thick glasses?”

“Yeah, you don’t recognize them?”

“No, should I? They’re not the bullies who were giving you trouble, are they?” Saeki looked from Arisu to her friends. “We had problems with some of Arisu’s ex-friends giving her a hard time. Do you know Ariu Aki? I thought she had scared them off.”

“No, they’re not the bullies. I am.” Arisu bit her lip, her eyes darting between her three companions.

“I don’t understand. You’d never be a bully.” Saeki said.

“There must have been a good reason,” Yuu added.

Only Touko accepted Arisu’s statement at face value. She remembered being bullied when they first met. But that hadn’t gone beyond nasty snark, hardly something that justified Arisu’s current melodrama.

“That’s Edamoto Haru and her girlfriend,” Arisu said, her voice #stiff, so low, that Saeki had to lean in to hear her.

“Right, you said Haru was ‘supposed’ to be my girlfriend.” Touko and Yuu gave Saeki questioning looks. For the moment at least, Saeki didn’t seem to realize how odd she sounded.

“You don’t understand,” Arisu said. “You only saw the time I told you she was cursed. There was more. Things you didn’t see.”

Only Yuu noticed Arisu's knuckles turning white as she twisted her clenched fingers in anguish.

Saeki resumed, “I told you it was all right. I love you and can’t imagine being in love with someone else. I’ve never even talked to Haru, and she isn’t my type. Athletic, she looks like she runs everywhere. So, I’m glad you disrupted this universe. I love only you.” It wasn’t the odd statement that brought a rose tint to Saeki’s face; it was the word “love.” It was so embarrassing to say, even in front of her two oldest friends.

Arisu gave her a weak smile. “It’s not that—I… I… bullied Haru. She must hate me. I told her to stay away from you, slipped nasty letters into her locker, even made creepy phone calls to her house.” She closed her eyes and blurted out, “I spread rumors about her, hoping they’d reach you—dreadful things. I called her a yariman—a filthy slut, a whore—I—I even considered poisoning her.”

“But you didn’t,” Saeki said gently. “I know you feel guilty about it. You’ve grown so much.”

“No, I haven’t! I might do it again if you liked someone more than me.”

“You wouldn’t.” Yuu quietly joined the discussion. “I know for two reasons. First, Saeki-san would hate that. Second, you’re beating yourself up about what you did. Not like someone who apologizes and then does it again, but like someone who has turned themselves around and hates how they once were. What do you think, Touko?”

@NaraMoore VERY emotionally complicated! I hope Yuu is right, but I wonder if Arisu *would* do it again, like she fears she might.
