delicious food and a peek into "Other" cultural practices is cute but it makes me wonder about these #nightmarket pop-up trends, and the simultaneous lack of support for establishing more frequent markets and/or more diversity in businesses across the metro area
@audrinabell how might we tackle this problem? Is this a regulatory problem that more progressive local govt leadership might help to facilitate?
@knizer
have you been curious about this also, or are you trying to tell me that I described a problem without knowing the answer? Regardless, it sounds like you're pointing to something solution-adjacent. Governments appear "progressive" in short bursts (look at this grant we delivered/ ribbon we cut etc) but making more seats at the table many election cycles in a row is very difficult and people who want to get in and support "different" policies need strong community support
@knizer
it's one thing for folks at the city to make having a single street festival easy, but what it might come down to is something about the influence of real estate holders and *their* values, which are likely more conservative -- otherwise why do we have so many chains and franchises. Now I'm thinking we need to see some maps about real estate holdings and compare that to city budget lines and relate those to neighborhood upkeep decisions. *same "problems" in boston also btw

@audrinabell progressive leadership ideally sees value in preserving space for public market use in a thickly settled, expensive area like near Harvard.

No one solution solves it- my take is 1. getting money, especially real estate investor adjacent money, out of politics is crucial, as is fighting corruption and cronyism
2. supporting candidates with a history of pro-people advocacy.
3. fight tooth and nail to keep and add to public spaces near transit hubs where events like this are expected and safe (more anti-car infrastructure, more public restrooms etc) and
4. increase taxes on orgs and the wealthy to fund muni improvement efforts, eg millionaires tax

@knizer
Leadership comes in many definitions also -- there are "leaders" who want to get reelected then there are leaders who want strong communities who don't necessarily get into government level politics. I love a good festival but I stand by my theories ...once a year "ethnic" festivals do not a progressive community make.
I was just in the UK and the capital of colonizers has many well-established *neighborhoods* full of very good shops from the diasporas.
@audrinabell sorry, are we disagreeing, and if so, where? on tactics?
@knizer
do you think I'm arguing about something? The festival post inspired me to declare on a social media that I don't see pop-up markets as an indicator of strong communities. Also I don't have a great sense of gov workings in Camber-ville (*who ARE the leaders?) but we aren't as radical or progressive as we pretend to be in the metro Bos/Cam area, and I am constantly on the hunt for the expansion of long term support for folks who are still excluded from most opportunities.
