The Pound. This little yard is the site where stray animals used to be impounded in the 16th and 17th centuries, owners having to pay a fine for their release. The shape marked with bricks shows the site of the wartime ARP wardens' hut, also the site where one of the local cricket clubs (The Wardens) was founded!

Chris, what is delightful image! My eyes just kept wandering here and there wanting to examine the next lush piece. Thank you for sharing that with us.
We have them dotted about all over the place here. Hardly a single wooded area facing onto open fields which doesn't have one or two.
We use them as hunter's shelters, and some hunt from within them rather than walking out and searching. Similar to observation towers, but for a bloodier purpose.
