Our intro:

Q1. Where are you posting from today?

I swapped bikes with a colleague for a bit and tried a new e-bike. Did you get to try something new this week? (cycle related or not)

#BikeNiteQ #BikeTooter #Cycling cc @bikenite

(Please include #BikeNite hashtag in your answers)

@bikenite A1. I am in Oakland CA and as mentioned, got a chance to try a colleague's ebike yesterday. It felt pretty standard as I've tried a couple before. It has a newer Bosch motor with a small color display and it was interesting seeing the display give me notifications to shift.

I wonder if that is configurable? I felt like I was using a comfortable cadence.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1: I'm in Brisbane Australia (where bike 'nite' happens on a bright and sunny mid-morning).
This week I got to ride my project bike (an old mountain bike I stripped down to the frame before rebuilding as a touring bike) around the backyard a few times (still waiting on some bits before I'll consider it safe for the road).

#BikeNite

@TicklishHoneyBee @ascentale @bikenite I love the colour and the rear rack. #BikeNite
@lopta It's a Tubus Cargo Classic, I've also got a Tubus Tara lowrider rack for the front, which came in the mail about an hour after that photo was taken.

@TicklishHoneyBee @ascentale A1 bike night finds me on a sunny frigid Naarm morning.

I'll wait tomorrow for my weekend ride this week, tomorrow is meant to be double digits :)

#BikeNight

@TicklishHoneyBee I hope one of those parts includes front brakes!
@gcvsa Yeah, I have everything for the brakes except the bolts to attach them to the frame, they should be here on Monday (along with several others - replacing everything with 316 stainless).

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Hudson Valley as usual.
I tried a new route a couple days ago—part of it worked, part of it didn’t, but I felt like an intrepid explorer (only half kidding….)
Tomorrow I’m exploring a different route, and that will be fun too.
I haven’t figured out the best way to use an app for route-finding, so that’s part of the learning curve too.

#bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A1 Posting from Beaverton, OR today.

I did not get to try something new, but I am allowed to resume doing something old; the orthopedics surgeon gave me the OK to start riding my bike again!

Unfortunately my bike is still in the shop 🥲

#bikeNite

@yantor3d @bikenite closer than before!
@ascentale @bikenite But the 3rd annual Pedal Around Portland is tomorrow and I still only have one (1) bike so I will miss it 😞
@yantor3d @ascentale @bikenite: And that 1 bike isn't suitable for that ride? Or have I misunderstood something?

@xtaran @ascentale @bikenite That one bike is in the shop for routine maintenance and minor repairs after the crash that shattered my clavicle seven weeks ago.

Because I was unable to drive for three weeks I only was able to drop it off last week. And the shop is busy so it only got to the front of the queue a day or two ago.

But, as I have been mostly idle for seven weeks, probably not the best idea to start off with a 40 mile ride...

@yantor3d: Ah, sorry, then I indeed misunderstood you. I thought you have one bike besides the one currently being repaired. Anyway, get well soon. And your bike, too.

@ascentale @bikenite A1: Sydney, Australia where nothing new is happening, but the garden is convinced that it's spring so I have broccoli to eat and lawn to mow. Also evidence that the neighbour's rooster has been visiting, I've had a couple of fertilised eggs from the chickens.

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Rushford, Minnesota.

Took public transit here for the first time. Really good deals on travel from small town to small town if you don't want to use a car. If you request it, their small busses will come with a bicycle rack!

Took me a while to figure the "Transit" application program out for here, even though I'd used it in Boston.

#BikeNite

@cainmark @ascentale @bikenite That’s something I hadn’t thought of using before. Do they cover the whole Root River Trail system? #BikeTooter #bikenite

@Brownian_motion @ascentale @bikenite

From small town to small town, yes. But you have to schedule it 24 hours before. I found out they do round trips, too.

I used it because I couldn't make it past Lanesboro and get back home before dark.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

I'm home again, posting from southern New Mexico. And I'm delighted to report that it's raining, which is a big deal in the desert.

Not much new this week, just my normal camping, hiking, and doing science.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Posting from home in Northumberland, UK, and a prompt response to the question for a change, but I really should get to bed because I need to be up in ~7 hours.

No cycling for the last couple of weeks, but I did get to watch (in person) the first MotoGP races at a new circuit, Balaton Park in Hungary. (Opinions are somewhat divided about whether it's a good circuit for motorbikes, particularly the MotoGP class.)

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1 - windy Melbourne. Very windy Melbourne. Big storm last night

Newest thing of interest was a chicken tray bake I made last Sunday night, tasty, but fiddly to make

@ascentale Nashville, TN. Not a huge amount of new stuff this week, but we did explore a new area - a new development with a nice car-free area on the edge of downtown Nashville. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1: posting from Alameda, CA.

I competed in my second ever sailboat race this weekend (I’m not usually driven by competitiveness, I mostly just like randomly sailing around). I got last place, but I finished, which did not happen in my first race, so there’s that!

@saltbaygull @ascentale @bikenite Now I want to hear Lin and Larry Pardey singing, "Sailing Around the Yacht Club Bar".

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Posting from my bedroom desk in New England, as usual. New to me this week are:
1. rigging my ebike to carry ~500 deposit cans and bottles to the redemption center
2. a new Coleman cooler that fits my rear milk crate basket (see last week's #BikeNite) to help me buy frozen and refrigerated foods from the markets when it's not Winter.
3. My first-ever stint as the sole check-out volunteer for my town's public library ebike lending program.

@bikenite A1. In the St. Croix River valley (east Twin Cities) on the Minnesota/Wisconsin (US) border.

I just got a new MIPS smart helmet that is also NTA-8776 compliant for e-bike speeds. I have enjoyed riding with it this week, it's very comfortable and the built-in turn signals have been very useful instead of using hand signals.

#BikeNite

@puppethead @bikenite Lovely place! Rode up to William O’Brien park and overnighted last weekend when the weather finally cooled off. #bikenite #MNastodon #mnstateparks

@ascentale @bikenite

#BikeNite A1. Ventura County, California. I hooked up the e-bike I have to a few (old) batteries, and ran up and down a hill with them! Slowly. The batteries don't have much oomph, and I have my doubts on the hub motor LOL. But. It does work.

#BikeNite A1: I'm posting from my favourite spot along the Health Valley Trail (part of the Trans Canada Trail) in St. Jacobs, Ontario, Canada.

Nothing new that's bike related, but I'm going through various computers that I manage, and am upgrading them to Debian 13 "Trixie". I haven't broken anything too badly (yet).

#WaterlooRegion #HealthValleyTrail #TransCanadaTrail #Debian #SysAdmin

@ascentale
@bikenite

@bobjonkman @ascentale @bikenite Oh, I didn't even know there was a new Debian release. I'm running Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 and Raspberry Pi OS at home, both of which are Bookworm based.

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A1: Posting from Zurich, Switzerland, where I just came back from today's Critical Mass ride.

I recently discovered a (for me) new brand of USB-rechargeable bicycle headlights with high and low beam, #MagicShine. I couldn't decide between two models, Hori 1300 and Evo 1700 and they weren't the most expensive ones, so I bought both and—for fun and comparison—mounted both + my Ravemen FR300 "be seen" headlight+powerbank.

→ Mostly good hardware, shitty Android apps

@xtaran @bikenite That's a lot of headlight!
@ascentale @bikenite A1 follow-up: Actually, having both headlights on (or even all three as the Brompton also has a headlight below the front bag, albeit with only a rather narrow low beam) at the same time doesn't really bring any more improvement. So I think you only need more lumens if you're needing a flood light for e.g. downhill biking.
@xtaran @ascentale @bikenite I bought MagicShine MJ 906 back in 2019, for night rides on our local hill. That thing is so incredibly bright that I rarely use it at full force, and I am glad it has a bunch of less nuclear levels...

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Toots from the normal Atlanta.

Nothing new going on this week really. Most of my brain power is going towards an impending move.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite A1 Posting from Carbon County Montana. I played Bike Polo for the first time this week and it is a gas! I am pretty sure that I will now need a “polo bike”
@ascentale @bikenite A1. Santa Clara,CA. I rode my bike to a pool party last weekend, the last time I would have done something like that was when I was a kid, but nobody had a pool in those days. So a first! #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

Avignon: city of the Anti-Popes

Olive and Honey Confit. As sort of sweet, salty, savoury, sticky relish. Not sure it's very healthy but very morerish

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @bikenite That sounds very interesting. Actually, being in Avignon does, too. #BikeNite

@meganL @ascentale @bikenite

I have to get out for a ride very early otherwise it gets too hot (for me at least) to properly enjoy. My Garmin tells me I am 100pct adapted to high temperature riding - but frankly I am unconvinced.

There's little wind, no shade, and the landscape seems designed to reflect sunlight back at you. It's lovely but after a couple of hours I am toast

@meganL @ascentale @bikenite

But it's heart-wrenchingly beautiful, has proper history, really friendly locals, and amazing regional food and drink.

So all in all - it's pretty amazing

@MatthewNewell @ascentale @bikenite I can relate to the heat. Back in Davis, for most of the year I did everything I could to make my rides happen in the morning. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite HI I MISSED IT FOR REASONS BUT LET'S GOOOOOOO

A1: usual north King County / north of Seattle. Something new this week um um um OH RIGHT I figured out how to make decently water-resistant stickers at home! That's new.

#BikeNite

@ascentale
A1: Posting from Mallorca again. This week I have been riding this KTM road bike. It made me wonder whether I should buy a lighter bike for the long weekend riding.
@bikenite

#BikeNite

@jfparis @ascentale @bikenite Oooh, I hear "Mallorca" and crave carob photos instead of beach photos... Have fun! #BikeNite

@jfparis @ascentale @bikenite

A1. No. Not jealous at all. Well, maybe just a massive bit 🙂

Hope you're having a great time in Mallorca.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Pogradec, Albania (soon on to another city, though).

I spent a lot of time inside this week doing administrative work for the "household", so not much chance to try new things. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Hello from Highcliffe-on-Sea. Yes, please see A2. Which means that I haven't even seen the other new thing, which is sitting in a bike box. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite Nagoya, Japan.

It's a thing *totally* unrelated to cycling, but this week the need arose to notarize a MacOS binary for distribution. I have an Apple Developer account, but I've not done this before, I'm struggling with it (and if there's anyone out there with experience at signing programs for use in MacOS, I'd very much appreciate a chance to pick your brain).
#bikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite Joining in Saturday AM local time from north western Minnesota this week, spending time with the oldest grand kid before school starts. Our location this morning is probably the “newest” thing this week. #bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Posting from South Devon, coming to the end of a couple of weeks of holiday. Nothing really new to report, apart from the tantalising offer of a good circular ride when I am next in the area.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A1 posting from suburban #Minneapolis. newish thing: road downtown to catch the lrt and meet some friends for dinner. The detour due to the endless green line extension project made me a bit late, but I’m so much wiser now. #bikenite

@ascentale @bikenite A1. I’m in sunny Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, where the temperatures have cooled off from what they had been for much of the summer.

Last weekend I started a new batch of sauerkraut fermenting, and added slices of Hungarian Wax Peppers — hot, but not scorching hot — as an experiment. I’ll find out in a couple of weeks how it tastes. 😀🥬🌶️

#BikeNite

@uxmark @ascentale @bikenite

Make sure you come back and let us know about the sauerkraut!

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite

A1. Posting from the North Shore of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake (by area).

We try to bring bikes up every year for our Labor Day week at a lakeside cabin.

Biked a 28-mi loop this afternoon to a state park, then inland up a hill, then a joyous descent into Grand Marais. Last day of meteorological summer—the Fahrenheits are heading south real soon.

What’s new? A Chukar sighting! Explained in meta text. #BikeNite #BikeTooter
