There is a reason hardcore nerds are often against tech like LLMs(AI) and cryptocurrency

We know how the shit works-ish and what the real costs are 🤷

Same goes with "smart doorbell" this and "smart fridge" that, we do not want that stuff

The ideas behind it at the start are sometimes good and fun to play with but it always ends the same way, capitalize over everything else

If you really want tech advise, listen to your nerds

We live for this stuff, good and bad

@stux I suspect this is why I'm not categorically against LLMs: I haven't really made time to try to put it in a workflow yet. I've chatted with some instances and over a small exchange, they're remarkable.

(... and as for image generation: I'm watching actual artists integrate it into their workflows to do things like placeholder images and storyboards, the kinds of things they can draw by hand but increase the cost of the whole project by Nx and doesn't end up in the finished product. I'm pretty confident that use case is here to stay, especially since we're on our way to running those tools on local graphics cards and those instances are good-enough for that use case).

@stux Also some would even host some LLMs on an own server. 😅
@gelbphoenix In this case im more talking about the millions upon billions spend on servces like ChatGPT etc 😉
@stux Agreed! (Besides that could using ChatGPT, Claude, and other services even be incompatible with data protection laws)
@stux I feel like I remember a story about how the people who *really* understand computers would say things like, "The only technology I allow my computer to connect to is this printer, and I keep this axe handy in case that goes rogue."
@flashesofpanic @stux This reminds me of my grandfather, who was an accountant and CompSci professor. The computer he used for his accounting work was not connected to the Internet. He had a separate computer for emails and such.
@ghislaine @stux When I was in grad school (for CS) we had a presentation from a visiting professor who did the whole thing in dry-erase markers on transparent plastic sheets, using a projector, rather than Powerpoint. We must have looked just surprised enough that, about ten minutes in, she paused and explained, "I don't think you can do really good computer science unless you hate computers."
@stux
I'm just smart enough to not have to know everything. I rely on scientists for science, doctors for medical and my nerds for tech. 😊

@stux

I will never ever let any "smart" thing or "AI" in my house. I keep a cricket bat next to my laser printer just in case.

@stux
Also : Watch what they let their kids do…
@stux - I received a rather odd note today - https://toot.community/@SupportTeam/115113071882340940 - seems not authentic, asking for a card and authentication? Something's not right with this one, and I've done nothing with it. Please advise.

@UberZeitgeist

There's been a wave of criminals on Fedi posing as server admins and trying to trick people. Based on the name of that account and the fact that it's banned, I'm guessing that was one of them.

@argv_minus_one - good to hear that. I did not interact with it at all.

@stux
"Listen To Your Nerds!"

Tshirt/placard worthy, that.

@stux

I am considering asking my landlord for a wood stove and ice box to replace my current appliances ;-) .

@stux I always say: "The more I learn about technology, the less I want to have it"

@stux amazing discovery: capitalism exists, therefore math must stop

bold plan

let me know how the abacus union votes

Cryptographic and hashing algorithms have finite lifetimes because computers get faster. That is why cryptographic keys and certificates have expiration dates.

Yet people who don't know much about crypto think blockchains are eternally secure, even though they are made up of digital signatures, which rely on hashing algorithms.

I won't touch cryptocurrency with a 4096-foot pole.

@stux

@stux Nobody f**** with my smart doorbell!😉😘
(It‘s without video and audio. Just a little ESP8266 that sends MQTT messages to a smart speaker when the regular button is pushed.)

@stux

If you know what to expect and what to get in exchange - go for it. Like a handicapped friend, electric engineer, he arranged some home automation around Alexa.

Mom recently got a smart TV - because of no choice. Doesn't have/need/want internet.

The smartest things in my home:
- smart TV (runs via PiHole)
- The raspy sends msgs to NTFY when the WiFi power plug indicating the washing machine is done

For most "smart" devices IMHO - no benefit for me. Dont want it.

@stux Make sure you're not just falling into the trap Douglas Adams described:

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/39828-i-ve-come-up-with-a-set-of-rules-that-describe

A quote from The Salmon of Doubt

I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary an...

@stux
Off-topic, stux, but is there any way I can get a
human being to give me a reason why my mstdn.social account was de-platformed around the middle of November?

Nothing I have tried has gotten any kind of response.
Of course, getting reinstated would be even finer.
Thank YOU if you have even taken the time to read this message.
Much love.
