Hey all y'all need to stop using "guys" in mixed company.
- My trans girlfriend is not a guy.
- My cis girlfriend is not a guy.
- I'm not a guy (or a girl, but that's not relevant here).
Misgendering is misgendering—even if "everyone's doing it".
Patriarchy shouldn't be the default.
@alice I guess this indoctrination starts early. The Strawberry Shortcake show from 2009 uses "guys" all the time, even though 95% of the time there are only girls.
@alice They even use "guys" correctly in one episode, proving that they understand it.
@alice The newer show from 2021 sidestepped the issue by referring to people as "berries" instead. I guess it was their way of portraying trans and nonbinary characters without triggering conservative parents too much, since it's still a corporate IP. But it's a lot more progressive and inclusive than the previous reboots, for sure.
@alice Another thing related to this that can be seen in the Strawberry show is that using gendered words when not talking about gender increases the chances of your message being misinterpreted.
I mean, it isn't clear (to me at least) that this character intended for his remark to sound misogynistic, but it is clear that it was perceived as such by the others.
@alice Side note: while the animation in this movie is not exactly top shelf material, I love the microexpressions in this scene, especially Blueberry's shoulders.
The voice acting also nails someone trying to sound calm and polite while being outraged. This voice cast is amazing (most of them are also in My Little Pony).
@alice Another side note: this is one of my favorite movies ever. At the very least it's the most underappreciated movie I know of. Here is a (spoilery) review of it by Addy Lovestar, a trans woman who unfortunately has not yet joined the Fediverse.
