@Phantastopia 2500 years of western philosophy and 5000 years of asian philosophy should have prepared us better, but we humans tend to only learn through self-experienced repetition. In good and bad ways :(
@Phantastopia But, alas, getting lost in negativity doesn't solve anything. So I continue my stoic way of sharing knowledge and experience, knowing (not hoping) that living this way makes me a better human and hoping it inspires enough other fellow humans to follow a similar path. It's a tough life, but

I think BSG has several excellent examples why and how to seperate military and civilian state, if I remember correctly.
I should rewatch it, but following you reminded me to finally watch Foundation. And I usually don't even find the time to watch Tagesschau, so we'll see how that goes...

In our constitution, we ruled out the use of the military within the country—except for aid after natural disasters. It's frightening to see the USA falling behind its own rules while everyone watches. I thought there were these "checks and balances" there.
MackajTurns out the many of the checks and balances were just custom and tradition, waiting for a leadership with fascist ambitions to disregard and ignore.

It is not the name that makes the difference btw military & police
It is if they see you as citizens or foe, as human being or as a legitimate target

Leendaal@jwildeboer ideally yes but in practice the police typically serves the wealthy, and thus the average person has no force that fights for them.
In that scenario it just happens that the interest of the state and the capital are so well aligned that both forces follow the same goals and thus become one by nature.
