Loose #seatbelt buckle in #GolfGTI (had been there since I got the car in May) had been annoying me (even though it must have passed MOT inspection, which was done in April).

This video is from yesterday - spent part of that evening researching how the buckle 5G4 857 756 E YLZ fits to the seat, and how on earth to get at nut N 989 24 301 (which I suspected had worked loose)

This afternoon started with a trip to Euro Car Parts for a set of #XZN / #TripleSquare / #spline bits (widely used on #VW as well as Torx, but I didn't have any - they seem to have 3 names for the same thing)

Collected 1 (one) set of spline bits from very friendly/cheerful lad at Euro Car Parts - removed 4 of M10 bolts that hold seat to the car and wrestled it out of the mountings.

Just about able to tighten up the silver bolt in last picture (M8) without having to haul out the whole entire seat (which means battery disconnected and unplugging the fiddly connectors for airbag / seat heater / occupation sensor / seatbelt warning switch) (

You have to support 20 kilos of seat with one hand whilst getting the ratchet into about 5cm gap, it took a couple of tries to get it tight enough so the buckle no longer moves, without going in too heavy and stripping something (estimated about 40 Nm torque, there is not enough space to get torque wrench in)

Put seat back on its mountings (there are locator pegs on left side), refitted bolts, torqued to 40 Nm and tested seatbelt buckle, now solid as it should be.

No errors appearing for airbag, seat belt sensor working, heated seats all good, managed not to scuff up anything badly nor gain any injuries (but I did clout my head on the steering wheel when moving the seat).

Hopefully that bolt stays tight now, at least I know what it is and where to get another if it doesn't, and I now have a set of spline bits (which are even strong enough to work with the ugga dugga) for any other jobs I might have to do over the months/years..

(this procedure should work on other models of the #Golf + a few other #VW #Audi #Skoda cars with same seatbelt)
