Steve Wozniak interviewed for CBS:

"I gave all my Apple wealth away because wealth and power are not what I live for. I have a lot of fun and happiness. I funded a lot of important museums and arts groups [...] I never look for any type of tax dodge. I earn money from my labor and pay something like 55% combined tax on it. Life to me was never about accomplishment, but about Happiness. I developed these philosophies when I was 18-20 years old and I never sold out."

He turned 75 4 days ago.

@m2m I wish we were in the Woz timeline rather than the Jobs one
@AlexanderVI @m2m we're in the Cook timeline. We're Cooked.
@AlexanderVI @m2m that would be amazing. So jealous of the people in that timeline
@m2m is there a link to the interview?
@m2m I really enjoy Woz and I'm glad you shared this. I looked up a recent interview online and he just seems like a great human being.
@m2m I met him at a speakers panel that MIT hosted years and years ago. He was very intensely Yer Friend's Dad, the one who would walk in wearing a sweatervest and asking, "What's this music? It has a nice beat!" But, you know, he meant it.
@m2m
If only there was a way to not rely on every rich person being a good person...
@m2m Continues to be the Superior Steve who is too humble to admit being the best Steve
@m2m he truly belongs to the hacker crew.
@f4grx @m2m yep, even came to defcon in the 2010s

@m2m

The sort of guys we need…

@m2m
Woz is the real Steve...
@knutson_brain @m2m where's Woz' movie? Make it a comedy, ir'd be all good vibes & something aspirationally positive. Maybe the next generation of billionaires would watch it and for moment think "I don't have to be an insufferable sociopath" and we'd all be better for it.
Right now all they've got is Citizen Kane, There Will Be Blood & Jobs. That can't be healthy.
@Finitum @knutson_brain @m2m Are we seriously at the point where we're considering putting on a heavy-handed play to convince Mr. Burns not to let schools and hospitals collapse?
@m2m Also of note, when Apple was going public, some employees were cut out of the process. The Woz gave them shares out of his own account.
@Tmmike @m2m I know of two similar cases. (Both Turks! Well; one a Kurd from Turkey.) The man who started Chobani yogurt gave an aggregate 10% of the equity to his employees, based on length of tenure. (This made some employees millionaires.) And the man who started Yemek Sepeti (Food Basket, a delivery service) had Delivery Hero, to which he sold the company, pay his employees a buyout bonus of, on average, $240k. Took a personal tax hit to ensure they wouldn't.

@m2m

Thank you for this!! Made my day.

@m2m Woz!!! Steve Jobs talked himself into a gig at Atari. Then got Wozniak to come in secretly at night to do the actual work (which he did 1000x better than necessary because he's a wizard), and his payment was playing free games on the machines afterward.
@m2m just keep it so. The world can be saved with people like you ☺️
@m2m It has always pissed me off that Jobs was worshipped and celebrated the way he was. He never invented anything, never built anything - he was simply a good marketer, a salesman. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Woz deserves so much more credit and recognition than he gets from the general public. Not that he really cares, though. He's the Steve people should emulate.
@5teverin0 @m2m we indeed have completely fscked up criteria for defining success.
@5teverin0 @m2m I think that you don’t do Jobs justice there. Yes, he was a good marketer, but he also had a knack for knowing how technology should work from a user’s perspective. He could not only sell existing stuff, but he also knew what to develop because people would want it. And he knew how to attract excellent people who could implement his ideas and drive them to the limits of their abilities. And yes, he could be an absolute asshole, drive people crazy and hurt them. He was no saint.
@m2m I'm sure I remember being able to ftp or telnet onto Woz's home network in the '90s or 2000s??

@m2m

Legend and wizard.

@m2m

@m2m

Amazingly, there are two (at least) great Steve Wozniaks. At least one catches fish. Here's the one that never built a great computer.

@m2m
I lost respect for Kathy Griffin when she broke up with him...
@m2m
I saw WAZ on tour in Oz.
He is an old man.
But it was inspiring to be in the same room as him.
A historic figure.
@m2m I wish this Steve had had a more tangible and direct influence on our tech culture than that other one did

@liquor_american @m2m

*shrug* To my last breath I will say that ADB is USB's great granddaddy.

@m2m I hope Tim Fucking Cook watches that interview and thinks about what he’s done.

@m2m

People should ask themselves, "What would Steve Wozniak do?" and conduct themselves accordingly.

@m2m iWoz is one of the best biographies, too. Highly recommend for anyone who hasn't read it yet
@m2m
👍🏼👍🏼👌🏻
@m2m Steve Wozniak Patron saint of nerds. Is it to early to petition the vatican for his beatification?
@m2m and he's the only one
@m2m mad respect to the lad, wonder if he's using android these days
@m2m @rick not selling out is easy when you've hit the lottery. Dozens of other companies, doing what Apple was doing, when Apple was doing it, didn't become Apple. Getting lucky as shit and then declaring one's own piety is kind of bullshit.
@jameswhite @m2m @rick if not selling out is easy when you've hit the lottery, why do so few who hit the lottery do it then

@m2m

I'll never understand the hold that Apple branding has on people's psyche's.

@m2m I wish that he still came to the local con in San Jose. I don't need a photo or autograph. I just want to give him a hug.

@m2m

"When each and every one of us is as precious as any other.

That is when we are human."
SearingTruth

@m2m really wish I could meet the Woz. He's like, my ideal people. Do it for the joy, the laughs, the smiles. Not for the money.

@m2m

If Woz and Jobs had never met, Jobs probably would've been an unsatisfied person; Woz would've probably been just fine.
