Just back from a quick walk over to the local ice-cream shop.

Rather had an urge for one of those tiger-swirl things with licorice in it, but alas they didn't have that.

My second choice was something peanut buttery and they had a chocolate PB thing with a nice cocoa-y chocolate and salty hard PB lumps which wasn't too bad.

Heading home across the park there was a #skunk in the failing light. Slightly different timing and we may have got to know him really well.

Aha - didn't realize 'Tiger-Tail' ice cream is a Canadian specific flavour. I haven't had it in a long time, but was thinking about it recently. Will have to scratch that itch!

Tiger tail ice cream - Wikipedia

I've located some tiger tail ice cream. About to launch a sortie to acquire some.

Acquired! For home use though rather than scooped at a shop.

Don't shop at Loblaws anymore much, but made an exception for this run.

Interestingly we didn't taste much in the way of licorice in the product, but it's reasonably tasty.

Reading ingredients, it doesn't mention any actual licorice in the licorice swirl part, but does say "natural flavour" and "carbon black." lol

The natural flavour could be licorice extract, but you taste almost nothing of it. I think it's mostly just colour to hint at the idea of licorice. That might make it more appealing to young people who never developed an affinity for the flavour?

@ottaross I think the new kawartha has it, too, if you want to compare!
@mathsciwhy yes. Noticed that too, though I'm trying to avoid that company as much as I can since they're apparently in deep with our annoying provincial premier's sleazy family.

@ottaross Is this orange and black liquorice

Edit: Appears so. Do not miss it. Happy for you though!

@ottaross Good luck! And it's somewhere open sort of late.
@mariellequinton grocery store, so we're well stocked now. Got the last container of that flavour from the Merivale Loblaws!
@ottaross It used to be such a standard, now I can't think of the last time I saw it in an ice cream shop. But also there's way less ice cream shops now.
@mariellequinton it does seem like there are fewer ice cream shops around. Yeah it was the rarity and nostalgia thing that made me curious to hunt it down again. Hoping I can find a brand that bumps up the licorice flavour a bit more. I see Chapman's makes one too.
@ottaross I wonder what I would think of it now. I detested it as a kid, but it's the type of thing that I might like as an adult.
@mariellequinton yeah our taste really seems to evolve as we get older. Not much that I dislike now but some things I really hated as a kid. Now I actively seek out strange and unusual flavours. ๐Ÿ˜‚
@ottaross @mariellequinton my bloodwork demands I seek out flavours like cardboard soaked in fish oil and I'm trying to listen to that.
@johnefrancis @ottaross I guess deep fried tiger tail is out of the question for you then ๐Ÿ˜œ
@mariellequinton @ottaross its the dairy more than the deep frying.
@johnefrancis @ottaross I presume it's deep fried in butter or something. I guess you could make a dairy-free ice cream with fish oil ๐Ÿคฎ
@johnefrancis @mariellequinton Ha! ๐Ÿ˜‚ By a funny coincidence, while at the store we also found a package of rye hard tack and a jar of pickled herring โ€“ which isn't too far off.

@ottaross @mariellequinton lunch was sardines on toasted light rye...not far off.

Let me know if you see any fish-based cheese.

@mariellequinton @ottaross Another inconvenience of Twitter disappearing is no longer receiving alerts from Merry Dairy when they release, e.g., a limited run of Tiger Tail.
@shawngettler @ottaross Haha, I checked their current flavours last night to see if they had any Tiger tail ๐Ÿ˜ Yeah, I miss that too. They were active on there.
@mariellequinton @shawngettler Oh yeah - that would be a great place to try it. They'd probably use actual licorice flavour rather than just a streak of "carbon black."
@ottaross Itโ€™s the flavour I try to get at an iced cream place, if itโ€™s gelato though, I get a lemon scoop and a chocolate scoop ๐Ÿ˜‹
@Ve3ldj haven't had it in many years, but hearing a mention of it recently makes me want to hunt it down.
@ottaross Iโ€™ve never seen that flavour of ice cream ๐Ÿ˜…
Although licorcice feels out of place, Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s good!
@EdwinG yes, you wouldn't normally expect that flavour in an ice cream, but it grows on you.
@ottaross I can confirm, theyโ€™re not on sale in my region.
@EdwinG interesting. If you have a Sobeys nearby, that might be worth a try, as I think they are big on the east coast. I'll let you know if I find some somewhere!

@ottaross The closest Sobeysโ€™ Sobeys that I know is about 200km away in Metro Ottawa ๐Ÿ˜…

Iโ€™ll check Sobeysโ€™ IGA to see if they have any.

@ottaross

LOVE it. Always got a cone after folks picked me up from away camp in the summer.
Loblaws own brand, Scoop Shop, carries the flavour in some supermarkets in the capital.

@KDramaQn interesting! Don't find myself in the Loblaw stores very often anymore, but might be worth a visit to check it out.
